INVESTMENT PRINCIPAL

The New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF) is fueling the province's tech sector by strategically investing in the creation and scaling of New Brunswick tech companies while stimulating and attracting new private venture capital to the province. As the leading venture capital firm in New Brunswick, NBIF executes a three-pillar venture capital investment strategy, which includes direct venture capital equity to New Brunswick technology companies, limited partner fund of fund investments, and creation of new funds for the benefit of New Brunswick. NBIF also provides innovation as well as acceleration and incubation operating grants to drive innovation adoption and scaling of companies. NBIF offers a comprehensive support system including actively participating on portfolio company boards, providing strategic guidance, and connecting startups and portfolio companies with our network of co-investors and industry experts. Since its inception in 2003, NBIF is frequently the initial source of equity funding for a New Brunswick tech startup. This commitment to investment impact extends beyond individual companies, fostering innovation, diversity, and economic growth across New Brunswick's priority sectors to drive generational returns.

THE OPPORTUNITY

NBIF is seeking an experienced Investment Principal to join our growing team. This is an opportunity to shape the future of New Brunswick's innovation economy by leading investments in high-potential startups and fueling the growth of our portfolio companies. The successful candidate will play a hands-on role across the full investment cycle: sourcing and structuring new investments, driving follow-on investments, and helping founders scale globally. Success in this role means mobilizing co-investment, increasing portfolio value, and helping NBIF-backed companies reach their full potential.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

• Source, evaluate, and lead investments, from opportunity assessment through term sheet negotiation, deal structuring, and closing.
• Drive portfolio performance by identifying and executing follow-on investments, exits, and liquidity events that strengthen returns and impact.
• Partner closely with founders and leadership teams to accelerate growth by advising on strategy, fundraising, governance, and operational excellence.
• Represent NBIF as a Board Director or Observer, providing strategic guidance, governance oversight, and leadership support to portfolio companies.
• Build and sustain high-value relationships with founders, co-investors, and ecosystem stakeholders to expand NBIF's reach and influence.
• Contribute to NBIF's investment strategy and internal processes, helping refine how we evaluate, scale, and support high-potential ventures.
• Contribute to foster a culture of collaboration, learning, and excellence.
• Champion the growth of New Brunswick's innovation ecosystem by connecting talent, capital, and opportunity to accelerate the next generation of founders.

WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS?

• 7+ years of experience in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, or a related investment or high-growth environment.
• Strong academic foundation in finance, business, economics, engineering, computer science, law, or a related discipline; MBA, CFA, or LLB designation considered an asset.
• Proven investment acumen with demonstrated success in deal sourcing, analysis, due diligence, valuation, and portfolio management.
• Advanced financial modeling skills and recognized creativity in structuring complex investment transactions.
• Governance and leadership experience, including serving on boards and providing strategic and operational guidance to portfolio companies.
• Entrepreneurial mindset, ideally with founder or operating experience in a venture-backed technology company.
• Exceptional relationship builder with a track record of influencing, negotiating, and collaborating across investors, founders, and ecosystem partners.
• Strong communicator, able to synthesize complex ideas and present with clarity and conviction.
• Mission-driven and passionate about building great companies, driving innovation, and delivering lasting impact in New Brunswick.
• Fluency in both English and French considered a strong asset.

LOCATION

• This role is based in New Brunswick, ideally in Fredericton, however this is subject to negotiation. Relocation assistance may be provided for the ideal candidate.
• Travel within Canada is required.
