As part of the Distribution System Operations team, the Apprentice Distribution System Operator will be training to become a Distribution System Operator (DSO) (shift and days). The DSO is responsible for triaging and dispatching trouble calls to the appropriate work groups, is the subject matter expert in NB Power's standard protection code on the distribution system (Operating Rules and Regulations) and issues switching instructions as to minimize impact to customers and ensure overall safety of NB Power employees, contractors, and the public.
Key functions include:
- Triaging and dispatching trouble calls to the appropriate field resources using the Outage Management System (OMS);
- Developing, approving, and executing emergency/emergent and real time switching instructions, live line work authorizations (hold offs), and work permits;
- Executing complex planned and approved switching orders, hold offs, and work permits.
Our ideal teammate will have:
- Two-year technical diploma in a relevant field (e.g., electrical, power systems, industrial control, or electronics) and five years of related experience
OR
- Recognized professional certification or licence in a field relevant to utility operations along with five years of related experience
The successful candidate will be assigned to an on-call roster and will be required to reside within one (1) hour response time to the active control centre.
The successful candidate will have to complete the Distribution System Operator Apprenticeship within three years from date of hire as a condition of employment.
As part of this process, PSP Metrics testing will be administered to candidates who successfully go through all steps of the process. PSP Metrics is a screening tool that predicts a candidate's potential for success in this role.
An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be modified.
An Eligibility List generated from this competition may be used to fill future vacancies at the same level within a period of up to 12 months.
