HGC a (Division of Englobe) is a full-service engineering and environmental company made up of a dedicated team of professionals trained and experienced in project management, engineering, and design specializing in civil and environmental projects. We are seeking an Intermediate Civil Engineer with a minimum of 6yrs experience in the design, management and construction of engineered earthworks projects, including waste management facilities, dams, engineered containment ponds, and associated infrastructure in the upstream oil and gas industry in Alberta and British Columbia. The ideal candidate will bring experience and knowledge in the design and construction of earthen embankments and geosynthetic containment systems as well as a strong understanding of Alberta and BC specific regulations and guidelines for the design and construction of waste management facilities, specific to the Oil and Gas industry.
These position will be based in our head office in downtown Calgary, Alberta. This position may require trips to the field, which can range from single to multiple days.

Your main responsibilities
- Project Leadership:
• Oversee the planning, design, and execution of waste management facilities, including engineered containment ponds, produced water ponds, stormwater ponds, tailings ponds, lagoons and landfills, conveyance systems, stormwater infrastructure, and associated works.
Technical Expertise:
• Collaborate with cross-functional multiple disciplinary teams including, hydrogeologists, geotechnical engineers, biologists, and construction managers.
• Provide technical support to EITs and juniors completing field QA/QC through construction projects (i.e., earthworks, soil QA/QV, piping and geosynthetic containment system installation).
• Conduct hydraulic modeling, site assessments, and engineering analyses to ensure optimal system performance and innovation in design solutions.
Regulatory Compliance:
• Ensure all projects adhere to Alberta and BC specific regulations, including Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA) guidelines, Directive 58, Directive 55, Water Act, and Management of Saline Fluid guidelines.
Team Development:
• Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and project teams, fostering growth and maintaining high-quality work standards.
• Provide home-based technical support to EITs and staff completing field QA/QC through construction projects (i.e., earthworks, soil QA/QC, and geosynthetic containment system installation).
Quality Assurance:
• Manage project documentation, design reviews, and approvals, ensuring alignment with professional engineering standards in Alberta.
Problem Solving:
• Address and resolve technical challenges during project design and execution phases.
• Bring practical expertise to the role, be able to think outside of the box and collaborate on fit for purpose solutions
What makes you unique
- Bachelor's degree in civil, geotechnical or environmental Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in civil engineering, with a focus on civil earthworks and waste management in Alberta, British Columbia, or similar environment.
- Experience with the civil design and grading of various structures such as containment ponds, reservoirs, landfills, roads, dams, and miscellaneous earthfill infrastructure.
- Must hold Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation and be registered with or eligible to register with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
- Strong understanding of the regulatory requirements for waste management facilities in Alberta and BC specifically Directive 55 and 58, and the Management of Saline for Hydraulic Fracturing Guidelines.
- Demonstrated success in managing complex, multidisciplinary projects with a focus on timeliness and budget control.
- Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities, with a collaborative approach to team and stakeholder engagement.
The following will be considered an asset :
- Understanding/Experience with engineering software, such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, and hydraulic modeling tools (e.g., PCSWMM, HEC-RAS)
- Strong project management skills with the ability to plan, coordinate and manage projects from concept through to completion, ensuring timelines, budgets, client's expectations, and quality standards are met.
- Adaptable to flexible work schedule when required to meet deadlines
- Experience with surface water grading, stormwater design, and wastewater treatment will be considered an asset.
