The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries (DAAF) is seeking an individual to join the Crop Sector Development Branch as an Agriculture Land Specialist, in Fredericton.

As a member of the Crop Sector Development team, and reporting to the Manager of the Regional Section and Land use Planning, the Agriculture Land Specialist is responsible for providing technical leadership for agriculture land development, including GPS/GIS mapping, weather data management, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) committee representation, land inventory management, regulatory support, agricultural lease oversight, leading land development initiatives, and participating in the development and delivery of funding programs such as the Canadian Agriculture Partnership (CAP). The Agriculture Land Specialist will provide guidance and expertise for legislation and policies related to land use. The chosen candidate will also be involved in developing and maintaining an agricultural land inventory, overseeing weather-related data and weather station maintenance, developing GIS applications or maps, reviewing EIA's, and supporting regulatory complaints. This specialist works closely with the Civil Engineering Technician as part of a team focused on optimizing the use of land for agriculture in New Brunswick. Responsibilities also include collaborating with team members to work on industry-identified opportunities and planning. Additional related tasks may be assigned as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A Master's degree in Science with specialization in Agriculture, Forestry, Engineering or Environmental Management, or a related field, with focus in land management and planning, remote sensing, or GIS mapping; and a minimum of eight (8) years of directly related work experience in agricultural development.

OR

  • A Bachelor's degree in Science with specialization in Agriculture, Forestry, Engineering or Environmental Management or a related field, with focus in land management and planning, remote sensing, or GIS mapping; and a minimum of ten (10) years of directly related work experience in agricultural development.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

NOTE: In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.

The successful candidate must be eligible for membership in the New Brunswick Institute of Agrologists, and membership must be attained within six (6) months of appointment.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate experience in one or more of the following: working with ArcMap and/or related GIS Tools; program development and delivery; leading projects and initiatives; working with agricultural producers and producer groups; agricultural production, land use planning, policy, report and strategy development, client service, regulatory oversight. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: travel throughout the province, including occasional overnight stays; work outside of the regular work hours as required; represent the province on sector related issues, at the inter-provincial and national levels. as required; possess a valid Class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent, and provide a current driver's abstract.

SALARY: $74,409.92 to $101,847.72 per annum
