The Local Government Division is the primary point of contact between GNB and local communities. With a vision of fostering vibrant and sustainable communities, the division provides support and advisory services to local governments and regional service commissions and is responsible for the administration of Rural Districts (RDs). The division consists of two branches: Regional Collaboration and Planning, which includes the Regional Collaboration and Provincial and Community Planning Units; and Community Finance, Local and Rural Governance which includes the Rural Districts, Local Governance, and Community Finance Units.
The Department of Environment and Local Government provides integrated stewardship through planning and management of land use, and waste management issues. It ensures effective enforcement of, and compliance with, environmental legislation and regulations and provides effective consultation and liaison with local governments, regional service commissions and Rural Districts on governance related issues.
What you will do?
As a member of the Provincial and Community Planning team, you will play a key role in shaping land use planning at the provincial level. You'll provide expert guidance on a wide range of planning matters, collaborate with a team of dedicated professionals, and work closely with government officials, local governments, and community partners. This is a unique opportunity to influence sustainable growth and help build thriving, well-planned communities across New Brunswick.
In this role, you will:
- Lead and advise on the review of proposed rural and municipal plans, amendments, and by-laws to ensure alignment with the Community Planning Act and related regulations.
- Shape provincial planning policy through applied research, analysis, and policy development.
- Engage and consult with local governments, regional service commissions, and key stakeholders to support collaborative planning outcomes.
- Build and strengthen partnerships with local governments, regional service commissions, provincial departments, First Nations, and community partners.
- Collaborate across GNB to advance priority projects and integrated planning initiatives.
- Prepare and deliver clear, compelling presentations, briefing materials, letters, and reports for senior management and external partners.
- Provide expert guidance on land use development procedures and responsibilities under the Community Planning Act.
- Provide strategic advice and recommendations on various aspects of planning, including land use planning and the development of rural and municipal plans, to the Provincial Planning Director and other senior officials.
- Manage and coordinate projects that advance provincial and regional planning priorities.

Essential qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in Land Use Planning or in a related field (for example: Geography or Architecture) recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners and a minimum of five (5) years of work experience in land use planning or a related field OR a Master's in Land Use Planning, or in a related field (for example: Geography, or Architecture) recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners and a minimum of three (3) years of work experience in land use planning or a related field. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates that meet the educational requirements but with fewer years of experience may be considered at a lower level.
- Possess a planning designation (RPP/MCIP), OR be working towards obtaining a designation, OR be eligible to begin working towards obtaining a designation.
- Subject to the response to this competition, candidates are required to demonstrate the essential qualifications on their application in order to be given further consideration.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability.

Asset Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate one or more of the following asset qualifications:
- Experience working in land use planning in the New Brunswick context.
Operational Requirements
Travel throughout the province is required. A valid Class 5 driver's license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick is required.

Wage
Pay Band 6: $2,991 to $ 3,979 bi-weekly, based on 36.25 hours per week
Work environment
- Standard hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15-4:30 (office schedule).
- Possibility of remote work within New Brunswick.
