The Department of Energy is seeking an individual to join the department as the Director of Energy Policy, located in Saint John or Fredericton

The energy sector continues to experience important developments in New Brunswick, both in terms of serving internal energy needs and capitalizing on export opportunities. The Department of Energy works closely with industry, communities, rights holders, and other jurisdictions to meet present and future challenges, support energy initiatives and growth opportunities, and to provide a long-range vision of business planning and development that aligns with the mandate, values, and economic accountability of the organization and its stakeholders.

As a member of the senior management team, and reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, the Director is required to plan and pursue various initiatives related to climate change and sectors such as electricity, alternative energy, natural gas distribution, pipelines and petroleum products.

The selected candidate will possess the following qualities:

Responsibilities include providing leadership to staff, developing work plans, supporting developmental opportunities, managing performance, establishing priorities, succession planning, and participating in human resources related activities.
  • Strategic Vision and Expertise: The successful candidate will have the ability to provide long-term business planning and development strategies that align with the organization's values and economic goals.
  • Strategic Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement: The Director will be proactive in fostering productive relationships with stakeholders and rights holders, and will participate in consultations with industry, regulatory agencies, utilities, consultants and governments, as well as participate in and lead significant multi-jurisdictional energy initiatives.
  • Resource Management and Financial Accountability: The Director will manage the branch budget and make financial recommendations, ensuring alignment with department and government priorities.
  • Advisory Role: The Director will provide expert advice to senior executives on complex issues impacting a range of stakeholders; contribute to legislative, regulatory, and policy development; and oversee the research and analysis of various sector specific issues in order to forecast the required regulatory, policy and legislative adjustments and ensure legislation and regulations meet departmental goals and objectives.
  • Additional duties and projects may be assigned as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A University degree in Engineering, Science, Law, Business Administration, or a related discipline; a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively more responsible related experience, including a minimum of five (5) years of experience related to policy, regulatory or legislative development; and a minimum of three (3) years at the manager level with human resources and financial management responsibilities. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Travel within and outside of the province as required, including overnight stays; working outside of the regular business hours on occasion.

SALARY: $111,280 to $125,346 per annum
