Marine Atlantic is currently looking for 2 Assistant Terminal Manager NSYD (Spare and Relief) to work with our Terminal Operations department, located in North Sydney, NS. As an Assistant Terminal Manager (Spare and Relief), you will be working in an on call, spare and relief, unionized position. Your shifts and schedule will be based on our operational requirements and in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.

Terminal Operations ensures that the various terminal facilities are appropriately staffed and supported to meet schedule and customer requirements. The Terminal's mandate is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally friendly, and on-time ferry service, operating between Port aux Basques and North Sydney year-round and between North Sydney and Argentia during the summer season. The Terminal is committed to maintaining a high level of customer service and operating within budget and in accordance with Marine Atlantic's Corporate Values.

Reporting to the Terminal Manager, the Assistant Terminal Manager(s) provides supervision over the terminals and the terminal staff. The Assistant Terminal Manager is responsible for ensuring the terminal is functioning in a safe and efficient manner.


Additional Key Areas of Responsibility

• Provides supervision to employees at the Terminal involved in customer service, ticketing, vessel loading/offloading, terminal administration, and janitorial services
• Promotes a safe working environment; ensures toolbox meetings are conducted, Job Safety Analysis are developed, addresses unsafe work practices, and makes sure that information is recorded in the tracking system.
• Ensures that Terminal activities associated with vessel loading and offloading are planned and coordinated to maximize efficiencies and maintain on-time performance. This involves regular interaction and communication with managers and supervisors on the vessel, at other terminals, and in other shore support departments.
• Investigates incidents involving employee or customer injuries or property damage; conducts root cause analysis and makes recommendations on corrective actions; follows up with appropriate parties to ensure corrective actions are implemented and reports details of the incident and corrective action in the Company's incident reporting system.
• Ensures daily staffing levels at the Terminal are appropriate to meet operational requirements by assessing the daily traffic volumes and vessel schedule.
• Provides supervisory support to Terminal staff to provide a high level of customer service in accordance with company standards and policies.
• Interacts with customers and staff in a professional and courteous manner, addressing customer questions and issues as required. Responds to situations of conflict and takes appropriate action as required.
• Prepares daily traffic related reports to be distributed to designated shore and vessel departments and managers, for example shore-based load plans and vessel sailing reports. This includes the transportation of dangerous goods by ensuring dangerous paperwork is sent to the chief officers with load plans.
• Works closely with vessel crew to ensure safe, effective, and efficient vessel load management.
• Assists in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as required

Education and Experience

University Degree or College Diploma in a relevant field with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a relevant role, including supervisory experience.

OR

A combination of equivalent education, job-related training, and work experience in a related position.

Qualifications

• Excellent supervisory skills
• Proficient communication and interpersonal skills, able to work collaboratively within teams and cross functionally
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and Excel
• Good organizational and time management skills

Assets

• Class 5 Driver License
• Experience supervising in a unionized environment
• Experience working with minimum supervision
• First Aid Certificate
• Emergency Response Training
• Experience working in a customer focused environment providing customer service
• Experience working in a 24/7 environment
