Site Description: The Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, NL, is a tertiary acute care facility serving the province and is a teaching hospital affiliated with Memorial University. It provides a wide range of services, including specialized treatments, emergency care, cancer care, mental health services, rehabilitation, and long-term care. The centre also focuses on research and innovation, staff well-being, and community engagement Position Details:

Position: Full-Time Security Guard Site: Health Science Centre Overtime: Overtime after 48 hours Hours: Continental Rotation Payrate: $19.67/hour Posting Date: November 5, 2025 Internal Closing Date: January 31, 2026 External Closing Date: January 31, 2026

Schedule Example:

  • Week 1 - Days - Mon-Tues, Fri-Sat
  • Week 2 - Days - Sun, Wed-Thu
  • Week 3 - Nights - Mon-Tues, Fri-Sat
  • Week 4 - Nights - Sun, Wed-Thu

Key responsibilities:

  • Patrol Hospital Grounds: Conduct regular rounds of hospital premises, including parking areas, hallways, patient rooms, entrances, and exits, to ensure the safety and security of the site.
  • Monitor Surveillance Systems: Operate security cameras and alarm systems, ensuring any suspicious activity is reported immediately to the appropriate authorities.
  • Access Control: Monitor and control entry points to the hospital, ensuring that only authorized individuals are allowed access to restricted areas.
  • Respond to Emergencies: Act quickly in emergency situations, such as medical emergencies, fire alarms, or security threats. Assist hospital staff as needed during crises and evacuations.
  • Provide Customer Service: Greet and assist visitors, patients, and hospital staff. Provide directions and ensure that guests adhere to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Conflict Resolution: De-escalate tense situations, resolve conflicts, and ensure that all interactions are handled calmly and professionally.
  • Report Writing: Document daily activities, incidents, or accidents accurately. Complete reports on incidents, breaches, and security concerns.
  • Collaboration with Hospital Staff: Work closely with hospital staff and local law enforcement to provide a coordinated security effort and ensure the safety of all parties involved.
  • Enforce Hospital Policies: Ensure that hospital policies, including visitor and patient protocols, are followed. Address any violations in a manner that upholds hospital safety standards

Prerequisites:

  • Clear criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
  • Valid First Aid & CPR - Level C (from a CSA-approved vendor)
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Screening: All healthcare workers must undergo assessment for tuberculosis.
  • Vaccination Documentation: Proof of completion of the full series of childhood/primary vaccinations is required.
  • Tdap Vaccine: One dose of Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Acellular Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine is required upon reaching 18 years of age.
  • Booster Requirement: A booster dose of tetanus toxoid-reduced diphtheria toxoid (Tdap) is required every 10 years
  • Valid class 5 Driver License
  • English (oral and written) fluency is a must
  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.
  • Must be able to provide certifications in Use of Force (UOF) and Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB)
  • Applicants lacking these certifications can opt into Paladin's UoF/MOAB training program prior to their onboarding training to ensure they meet the requirements of the position
