Summary
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Assistant Director of Care to join our team in Nova Scotia. This pivotal role is essential in ensuring that our residents receive the highest quality of care while upholding our values of dignity and respect. The Assistant Director of Care is responsible for the time schedules and for assisting with human resource matters in the Nursing Department. Other functions include: ordering and inventory of supplies, staff education, infection control, and acting as a clinical resource for nursing staff. The Assistant assumes the responsibilities of the Director of Care in her (his) (their) absence.
- Works with the Director of Care to support and assist the nursing staff to provide quality care to all residents
- Assists with the identification of educational needs of nursing staff and develops plans to address those needs
- Assists with the development of orientation programs
- Records the attendance of nursing staff at educational programs
- Develops time schedules in conjunction with staff that address the needs of the Home and takes into consideration the needs of staff
- Co-ordinates the purchase of supplies needed by the department and keeps an accurate inventory
- Assists the Director of Care with human resource issues-i.e. interviewing, problem solving, staffing, etc.
- Assists with staff performance appraisals as required
- Assists with the development of policy-procedures as required
- Is informed of infection control practices and ensures that these practices are understood and followed
- Records statistics on infections in the Home and prepares a monthly report
- Acts as a clinical resource for nursing staff-i.e. keeps in contact with residents and staff and is aware of their needs and concerns
- Participates in appropriate committees and communicates regularly with the Director of Care so that both are informed of all issues
- Liaises with physicians as necessary and ensures that the current on call schedule is posted
- Coordinates administration of required vaccinations for residents.
- Monitors usage of supplies bi-weekly to ensure appropriate products are being used given available resources
- including;
- Reviewing purchasing programs, and recommending appropriate vendors based on product specifications and price for supplies;
- Purchasing and following up on receipt of supplies;
- Recommending purchase of equipment for the department to the DON;
- Supervising storage of supplies (e.g. medications,) in keeping with provincial government acts, regulations and standards
- Assumes responsibility for O2 inventory ensuring it is used and stored in accordance with provincial guidelines and regulations.
- Coordinates unit medication reviews as per Care By Design policy
- Performs other related duties as may be required from time to time
- Current registration with Nova Scotia College of Nursing
- A degree in nursing is considered an asset.
- Experience in nursing management and /or nursing education
- 5 or more years of experience in long term care
- Computer literacy- familiar with use of spreadsheets, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect
