The position requires the operation and maintenance of sewage pumping stations. By working safely and cooperatively with others, employees in this classification contribute to meeting the operational objectives of Halifax Water. Operation of equipment and tools in difficult conditions in wastewater environment, inside and out is essential. The incumbent will be subject to confined spaces, noise, vibrations, odors, heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, and emergency call-outs after normal working hours.

Responsibilities

1. Perform and develop schedules and preventative mechanical maintenance on pumps, valves, piping and standby engines.

2. Clean stations, wet wells, valve chambers, and holding tanks.

3. Load and unloads equipment and materials as required.

4. General care, maintenance and safe operation of assigned equipment and tools.

5. Order supplies and materials as required.

6. Provide written and verbal reports concerning daily work activities.

7. Must be willing to work overtime for emergency call-outs

8. Perform related duties as required including all the general duties of a labourer.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Grade 12 required.
  • Completion of a minimum one year program of technical training in a mechanical discipline.

Apprentice Requirements Experience:

  • A minimum of one year experience working with pumps/motors/process controls.
  • Must have valid NS Driver's Licence with good driving record. Must provide a current driver's abstract

Required Knowledge, Skill & Abilities:

• A good working knowledge of pumps and motors, mechanical systems and motor.

• Good knowledge of hydraulic pumping systems and standby generators.

• Basic knowledge of computers, PLC'S, radios, and related devices.

• Must have training in Entry into Confined Spaces.

• Must have good verbal and written communication skills.

• Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision.

• Must have a good attendance and work record.

Working Conditions:

• Capable and willing to work both inside and outside in varying weather and conditions.

• Indoors & out in dust, fumes, volatile organic compounds, noise, heat, cold.

• Medium to Heavy Workload - May be required to work alone.
