The Role
Reporting to the Director of Indigenous Health and Cultural Safety, the manager works as a part of an evolving provincial team that includes the Director of Indigenous Health and Cultural Safety, Indigenous Health and Cultural Safety Advisor (Mental Health and Addictions), Indigenous Navigators, Cultural Safety Manger (Cancer Care Program -temporary), the DEIR Council and others. The Manager will also be accountable to the Journey of Collaboration (JoC) Steering Committee in the fulfillment of the JoC action plan. The manager will work with, and on behalf of Indigenous People and communities as well as with internal and external partners to support a distinction-based organization wide approach to the delivery of culturally safe care for the Indigenous peoples of Newfoundland Labrador.
As a part of the Office of Indigenous Health and Cultural Safety, with a focus on the Mi?kmaq perspective, and in collaboration with Indigenous partners the incumbent will:
? Engage with Mi?kmaq communities and people to understand their perspectives, strengths and challenges as related to health outcomes.
? Support the Journey of Collaboration Steering Committee.
? Support the development and implementation of a cultural safety framework for the NLHS.
? Support strategic and operational goals related to Indigenous Health and Cultural Safety.
? Support the implementation of relevant calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
? Support the development and implementation of an action plan to identify and implement policies and practices that support the provision of culturally safe care.
? Facilitate the implementation of Indigenous led curriculum modules to inform non-Indigenous providers on the legacy of colonialism, its ongoing impact to the health outcomes of Indigenous peoples and facilitate change towards a culturally safe health care system.
? Support the development of a culture of anti-racism, quality, safety and cultural safety and humility by establishing culturally safe processes to manage feedback and address safety incidents.
? Collect and report on key performance indicators in the areas of access, collaboration, cultural safety and health outcomes for Indigenous persons.
? Provide support to Indigenous Health Navigation within the health care system including that which is provided through both the NLHS and by Indigenous communities and organizations.
? Work with NLHS leadership, physicians and staff to enhance the patient and family experience of Indigenous peoples through the development of efficient, safe, patient centric care pathways or guided by a Patient and Family Centered Care (PFCC) philosophy.
? Work with NLHS programs and services to enhance the journey of Indigenous clients through the practice of trauma-informed care and programs such as Indigenous navigators, access to traditional foods and healing practices, support from Elders, and landbased healing; the specific initiatives should emerge from the recommendations made by local Indigenous communities, advisors, and clients.
While this position will work with many indigenous partners, it will focus initially on engagement and collaboration with Mi?kmaq communities on the west coast. The manager will work closely with the Journey of Collaboration (JOC) Steering Committee to implement the JOC framework and action plan to co-design health and wellness strategies, services, and programs, to address calls for action outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. While the Journey of Collaboration focuses on the Mi?kmaq of Western NL, the incumbent will, over time work to increase reach and collaboration with other indigenous communities and peoples throughout NL.
Requirements of the Role
The successful applicant will be an inclusive and visionary leader with the ability to build relationships, trust, and collaboration between NLHS and Indigenous communities and have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution, negotiation and a passion for improvement in the quality of care provided for Indigenous patients and families. The ideal candidate will:
? Demonstrate knowledge and experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations and knowledge of Mi?kmaq Indigenous culture and practices.
? Demonstrate understanding of Canadian colonization, Indigenous specific racism and its impact on current health and wellness of Indigenous Peoples.
? Preference will be given to qualified candidates who are Mi?kmaw.
? Have experience and/or knowledge of the provincial health systems and community resources.
? Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of cultural safety and competency within provincial systems.
? Possess a baccalaureate degree in Indigenous studies, health, social science, political science, public policy or another related field.
? Have at least two years of relevant experience (ideally within health system and working in Indigenous communities) and must include leadership experience.
? Demonstrate the key skills, behaviors, abilities, and knowledge outlined in the five domains of the LEADS in a Caring Environment framework.

The successful candidate will be expected to reside in traditional Mi?kmaw territory on the island of Newfoundland.
