We are hiring a Millwright/Industrial Mechanic

Position summary:

The Halifax Port Authority (HPA) is seeking a Millwright/Industrial Mechanic to join our team in supporting the safe and efficient operation of port facilities and equipment. This hands-on role involves performing mechanical maintenance, welding, and equipment repairs across various locations across port owned properties. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring our infrastructure is well-maintained, while also taking on related tasks as needed in a dynamic and collaborative environment. This position is part of the International Longshoremen's Association (Local 1843) bargaining unit and adheres to the collective agreement between its members and Halifax Port Authority, including hourly rates of pay.

What you'll do:

Mechanical Duties

  • Maintain, repair and install various facilities such as steel structures, vertical lift doors, siding, loading docks, gates, and other mechanical type projects
  • Repair mobile equipment, such as HPA vehicles, heavy equipment, and vessels
  • Repair and maintain other equipment such as welders, gangways, rostrums, generators, and any other equipment used by various shops
  • Carries out welding, cutting and burning as required
  • Install reinforcing steel for various projects, as required
  • Submit reports to Working Shop Foreman of job completion
  • Read drawings and sketches and work from these as required

Equipment

  • Complete equipment and facilities inspections to accurately diagnose and repair any mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, structural, or welding related trouble
  • Operate snow removal equipment as required during winter season
  • Operate loader, forklift, and other mobile equipment as required
  • Carry out other duties using welder's tools and equipment, including oxyacetylene burning, cutting and welding gear and arc welding equipment
  • Troubleshoot to diagnose equipment failures routine and non-routine

Other Duties

  • Assist in the garage as required, including moving gangways and cruise operations
  • Fill in as Working Shop Foreman of garage, when required by management
  • Inform Working Shop Foreman of material and equipment requirements
  • Assist Working Shop Foreman in the estimation of time and materials for work projects
  • Assist in snow removal, whether in a machine or shovelling, as required or directed
  • Overtime and call-in work as required

Note: These are only the basic and primary duties related and allied duties may be assigned from time to time as may become necessary to the operation of the Authority.

What you'll bring:

  • Certified Red Seal Millwright or Industrial Mechanic (other relevant experience and certifications, including CWB may be considered)
  • Five (5) years' experience in an industrial environment as a Journeyperson
  • Experience welding and operating heavy equipment
  • Forklift certificate is an asset
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and high elevations
  • Ability to complete moderate work (lifting up to 50 lbs) and stand/walk for the duration of a work shift.
  • A valid NS Class 5 driver's license with an acceptable driver's abstract
  • Willingness to work overtime and call-in work as required
  • Flexibility and able to work in a quickly changing environment
  • Three (3) years commercial driving experience an asset.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office 365, smart phone, and a maintenance management system.
  • Strong dedication to customer service, and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, customers, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Excellent command of the English language, verbal and written, be tactful,
  • Ability to multi-task, manage time effectively, identify priorities, and anticipate issues.
  • Can work independently, problem-solve, exercise judgment, takes initiative, and is well organized.

Working Conditions:

Moderate to extreme exposure to all types of weather conditions and risk associated with the work environment. Required on occasion to work at heights in lifts and in/on vessel decks and below deck in the hull.

Unionized Position:

This position is part of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) Local 1843 bargaining unit.
