Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.
We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.
The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.
In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

The Education and Training Lead is a Registered Nurse who is responsible for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of staff orientation and continuing education programs; coordinates staff development activities; for all TeleHealth programs and acts as a patient education consultant.
The Education and Training Lead is responsible to develop, implement, update and maintain all standard operating guidelines for both clinical and non-clinical roles within TeleHealth programs, ensuring alignment with current best practice, healthcare partners and meeting Accreditation standards.
Working Conditions:
- This role is performed from within an office environment located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where all training is completed in person.
- There is the option of working from home on predefined days and/or hours while ensuring all in person requirements are met for the role and flexibility around same.
- The amount of work from home will be at the discretion of the manager and based on performance of the individual.
Education
- Undergraduate degree Nursing. An equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer may be considered
- A diploma/certificate in Adult Education is an asset.
- Completion of a leadership course an asset.
Experience
- Minimum '5 years healthcare related experience and 3 years as an educator in a clinical environment or health related program
- Experience in a Telenursing environment
- Accreditation experience is a strong asset.
- Project management experience an asset.
- Experience in the design, delivery and coordination of adult education is considered a strong asset.
Certifications
- Licensed to work in Nova Scotia with the Nova Scotia College of Nurses or ability to obtain licensure and is in good standing and is compliance with all requirements pertaining to the NSCN.
Knowledge and Skills
- Advanced understanding of staff education programs (e.g. orientation, staff development, certification and student placements) and innovative delivery methods (e-learning)
- Ability to integrate principles of Adult Learning into all staff development activities
- Capacity to coach and mentor learners
- Good critical thinking, sound clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills
- Ability to effectively apply clinical knowledge and established processes to meet service and quality expectations and standards
- Good Leadership skills and collaboration with team members and stakeholders internally and externally
- Ability and willingness to become fully competent in all elements of telenursing service delivery and ability to consistently meet operational and quality requirements
- Ability to work independently within the constraints of professional and organizational policies and practices
- Ability and willingness to work different shifts when needed to accommodate specific staff development or operational needs
Service Delivery
• Plans and delivers an innovative staff education program which will enhance competence, performance, quality and productivity, and will meet the needs of both work at home employees and in-centre staff
• Plans and delivers monthly education sessions for staff (self-directed and/or web-based programs, in person or virtually) and as required.
• Designs and implements methods for assessing educational needs, identifying diverse educational experiences and delivering educational programs which utilize traditional and e-learning tools
• Designs, coordinates, updates and delivers staff orientation programs and appropriate follow up at specified intervals
• Designs and implements general and staff-specific educational activities to meet staff development requirements in a timely and efficient manner
• Responsible for the evaluation of all education delivered and implementing feedback received on a continual basis.
• Supports the Clinical Supervisors in providing additional education required for their staff members from a performance perspective.
• Responsible for ensuring preceptors have all the necessary tools for their role, organize preceptor meetings, review preceptor documentation and feedback where improvements can be made.
• Maintains reference library (electronic and print format) for all categories of staff
• Maintains a registry of all staff's participation in educational programs/experiences
• Assists with the preparation and review of patient education documents and programs
• Competently performs the duties of a TeleHealth Nurse for 20% of their worked hours each month
• Ensures patient safety is the first priority and understands the integrity of our service is based on our ability to safely and timely triage our callers
• Participates in Manager On Call rotation, after hours and weekend leadership coverage to provide oversight, guidance, support and operational/clinical decision making appropriate for the situation and the delivery of TeleHealth programs.
• Networks with various stakeholders as it relates to education purposes.
• Networks and works collaboratively within TeleHealth and greater EMC from a staff development perspective
• Responsible for the overall tracking, notification to staff and coordination of completing all SOGS with appropriate staff member input.
Service excellence and development
• Evaluates feedback to improve educational programs
• Participates actively in EMC TeleHealth Services Quality Program and Accreditation requirements.
• Evaluates current educational trends and adopts leading practices within the telehealth industry
• Considers future service development and adopts a proactive approach to staff education
