Supervisor - Aquatic Toxicology and Animal Health projects

The Huntsman Marine Science Centre Aquatic Biosciences department is looking to fill a Supervisor position with an individual having specific interest, experience and skillset associated with our ongoing research projects with a particular focus in aquatic toxicology and animal health.

Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a team led by the Manager Aquatic Biosciences and specific Research Scientists as Study Directors to develop Study Plans/Outlines, project budgets, required Data Capture Forms (DCFs).
  • Contribute to prospective project costing discussions so accurate quotes are developed for submission to specific Study Sponsors.
  • Allocate designated Aquatic Research Technicians to complete assigned project specific and departmental tasks.
  • Develop project specific resource requirement lists, including human, space, consumable and equipment, and present to the Manager Aquatic Services to ensure each project proceeds as planned.
  • Provide leadership to the project Aquatic Research Technician team to implement project specific husbandry tasks and data collection in compliance with applicable Huntsman Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Study Plans/Outlines.
  • Complete hands-on technical project related duties as necessary.
  • Record raw data promptly, accurately and responsibly for high quality data, in compliance with the Principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
  • Collect and transfer project specific DCFs from research spaces through the documentation Quality Assurance and archival process in conjunction with the specific project team.
  • Verify data recorded on DCFs to ensure compliance with Study Plans/Outlines as necessary.
  • Provide input as requested to complete interim and Final Study Reports.
  • Lead assigned and project specific purchasing activities that meet set schedules for timely delivery.
  • Provide workplace feedback to the Manager Aquatic Biosciences associated with assigned Aquatic Research Technicians to allow completion of interim and annual reviews.
  • Participate in the preparation of department Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to all activities and projects.
  • Overall organization of designated research spaces.
  • Design and implement assigned and project specific experimental setups.
  • Develop methods and training to deliver stated Study Plan/Outline requirements.
  • Exercise health and safety precautions to minimize risk to themselves and to ensure the integrity of the study.

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, while being detail-oriented and efficient.
  • Relevant Bachelor degree or technical diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrate understanding and experience working in aquatic toxicology and animal health studies.
  • Experience handling aquatic species and life stages that Huntsman Marine projects rely upon, including but not limited to salmonids, Atlantic cod, Atlantic herring, American lobster, green sea urchins, oysters, microalgae species, live feed production.
  • Proficiency in computer use including spreadsheets, word processing and internet is expected.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation, such as spectroscopy, fluorometry, qPCR, plate reader, autoclave, incubators, is an asset.
  • GLP experience is a plus.
  • Valid driver's licence - class 5.

Position is expected to involve weekend and holiday work, answering emergency calls and shift work might be necessary and as part of a staff rotation.

Pay/benefit package for a full time position, including health and dental care, enhanced paid vacation leave and 10 days paid sick leave, and voluntary participation in company retirement pension plan, amongst other benefits. An apartment may be available on a short-term basis to assist a new hire moving to the area for this position.

The Huntsman Marine Science Centre is an independent not-for-profit and charity, located near the mouth of the Bay of Fundy in St Andrews, New Brunswick, with a mission focused on ocean research, education and outreach. Huntsman Marine was established in 1969 by a consortium of universities, government departments, and private interests to facilitate collaboration between these sectors as they pertain to the ocean economy.

Huntsman Marine research is completed by a team of about 30 professionals within our Aquatic Biosciences department (https://www.huntsmanmarine.ca/research).
