Health and Safety Advisor
We are currently looking for an experienced Health and Safety Advisor who will be accountableto the Manager, Prevention Services, for advisory, consultative and educational services to employers. The incumbent will promote and evaluate occupational health and safety programs in the workplace and determine compliance with WorkplaceNL's PRIME program criteria. As industry champions, this is achieved by developing partnerships with employers, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Committees, Workers' Health and Safety Representatives/Designates and stakeholder associations. The goal is to educate all stakeholders in the prevention of injuries and disease and promote best practice models in the workplace.
Role Responsibilities
- Facilitates the development, delivery and evaluation of occupational health and safety programs, in consultation with employers.
- Applies professional knowledge and understanding in a variety of occupational health and safety areas, such as: leadership and administration, hazard assessment, safe work practices, education and training, workplace inspections, OHSC/WHSR/WHSD, accident/incident investigations, communication, emergency preparedness, disability management, safety standards and MSI Prevention.
- Conducts audits and makes recommendations for improvement to employer programs.
- Coordinates and conducts PRIME audits to ensure compliance with WorkplaceNL's PRIME program by using appropriate audit standards and PRIME principles. The advisor has a direct impact on refunds/charges through the employer's assessments.
- Employs knowledge of and may be assigned to specific occupational groups or industries, which may require technical or specialized experience is a selected area (e.g. oil and gas, fish processing, mechanical workshops, retail stores, mining, forestry, etc.).
- Analyzes and utilizes WorkplaceNL's data system in conducting accident/illness trend analysis in various industrial sectors.
- Assists in developing health and safety technical literature, departmental policy and procedures, guidelines and certification standards and training programs.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Diploma or degree from an approved college or university with a concentration in occupational health and safety management.
- A minimum of three years' industrial experience in auditing, health and safety, and MSI promotion at the corporate level.
- A safety designation would be a definite asset.
- Demonstrated experience in structured team building and oral/written communication skills are key components of this position.
- Well-developed organizational, analytical and problem-solving abilities combined with strong decision-making abilities, good judgment, and a demonstrated knowledge of the OHS legislation, WorkplaceNL legislation and standards for PRIME.
- A vehicle and valid driver's license are conditions of employment.
