The Department of Health is seeking an individual to join the Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch as a Biostatistician in Fredericton, reporting to the Director of Epidemiology and Surveillance, and supporting the New Brunswick Cancer Network (NBCN).
The NBCN is a division of the Department of Health, responsible for the development and implementation of evidence-based provincial strategies for all elements of cancer care and reporting on progress that has been made toward achieving these goals. The Biostatistician will be responsible for supporting NBCN's Cancer System performance Initiative.
As the Biostatistician you will:
- Use bio-statistical, epidemiological, and algorithmic techniques to work with the NBCN on the scoping and planning for the shared pan-Canadian cancer system measurement priorities, which may include various projects and plans for the implementation of the Pan-Canadian Cancer Data Strategy;
- Plan and coordinate support for pan-Canadian and international cancer care benchmarking projects and various New Brunswick and Canadian Cancer System Performance reports;
- Support the development of cancer care indicators and associated appropriate contextual information;
- Collaborate and develop working relationships with key stakeholders to understand the current data collection capabilities;
- In alignment with the NBCN's mandate, design and establish workflows and processes such as the identification of appropriate data sources, data collection, data linkages, high-quality data validation, and data sharing agreements;
- Use various statistical and data management software to prepare large and varied administrative datasets of cancer/health system data and provide accurate statistical analysis and interpretation of complex cancer care data, including development of models and/or algorithms;
- Attend NBCN's and CPAC's regular partner status calls and complete other related tasks such as quarterly status workplan and budget reporting;
- Communicate results in a clear and concise manner;
- Support day to day NBCN cancer data and analytic needs as needed.

Essential Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or Economics
- Minimum of five (5) years of related experience working with large health related databases, OR
- Bachelor degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Economics
- Minimum of six (6) years of related experience working with large health related databases
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
- Must be proficient in the use of statistical software such as SAS, Stata, SPSS, or R.
- Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability on your application.

In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.
Asset Qualifications: Preference may be given to candidates that possess one or more of the following asset qualifications:
- Experience working with cancer data and surveillance
- Experience with indicator development and performance measurement in a health care setting
- Experience writing reports and developing presentations
- Knowledge of epidemiological and statistical methodologies for program performance measurement
Candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications, in addition to the essential qualifications, in order to be given further consideration.

Salary: $2,991 to $3,979 bi-weekly (Pay Band 6)
