The General Counsel/Manager of Legal plays a pivotal role in shaping the legal and strategic direction of the Workers Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC). This position is responsible for overseeing all legal matters impacting WSCC operations, ensuring compliance with legislation, and safeguarding the organization's integrity and reputation.

In this dynamic role, the General Counsel delivers high-level legal servicesranging from in-depth research to proactive legal adviceacross all WSCC divisions. The successful candidate will lead the management of all litigation, including third-party and internal legal disputes, while providing trusted counsel to the President, Governance Council, and senior leadership on complex, sensitive, and often ambiguous legal and policy issues.

Here are a few ways you will make a difference:

  • Providing senior level legal services and advice regarding the WSCCs operations in NT and NU.
  • Planning, managing, directing, controlling, and monitoring the work of the Legal Unit.
  • Acting as a committee member on various committees that may be established to coordinate and manage special projects or programs.

What you bring to the role:

  • A Bachelor of Law degree, with a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in administrative law and corporate governance environment.
  • Membership in both the Law Society of the NWT and the Law Society of Nunavut are required. Can hold one membership with the other in progress.

Equivalencies: May be considered based on a one-year of directly related experience equivalent to one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.
