We are seeking a Protection & Controls Senior Technologist to join our engineering team. Reporting to the Protection & Control Engineering Manager, you will provide essential technical support to our design engineers in developing and implementing protection systems across Nova Scotia's electrical grid.

This role focuses on creating detailed technical drawings, specifications, and documentation that transform engineering concepts into constructible designs.


Key elements of this role include:

Technical Documentation & Design Support

  • Preparing comprehensive P&C technologist drawing packages for transmission lines, substations, and generators under engineering guidance
  • Creating and modifying panel wiring diagrams, cable connection drawings, and equipment layouts
  • Developing detailed cable lists, schedules, and bill of materials for procurement teams
  • Updating and maintaining panel layouts and equipment specifications

Project Coordination & Procurement Support

  • Coordinating with procurement teams and equipment suppliers on technical specifications
  • Selecting and sizing panels, auxiliary equipment, and cables based on engineering requirements
  • Tracking materials and deliveries to align with project schedules
  • Reviewing vendor submittals for compliance with specifications

Quality Assurance & Field Support

  • Reviewing technologist packages for completeness and technical accuracy before construction release
  • Providing technical support during equipment installation and commissioning phases
  • Conducting field visits to verify installations and troubleshoot system issues
  • Supporting operations teams with technical documentation and system knowledge

Standards Compliance & Safety

  • Ensuring all work complies with Nova Scotia Power standards, IEEE guidelines, and regulatory requirements
  • Maintaining current knowledge of protection equipment and industry best practices
  • Following all safety procedures and contributing to a culture of safety excellence
  • Supporting environmental initiatives and compliance requirements

These skills will make you successful:
  • Electrical Engineering Technologist Diploma from a recognized institution
  • Full CET membership with TechNova (or eligible for transfer)
  • Minimum 6 years of experience with leadership in complex projects
  • Experience creating technical drawings and specifications for electrical equipment
  • Background in substation or transmission line design (preferred)
  • Proficiency with drafting software (MicroStation, Promis.e, AutoCAD, Bluebeam)
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and panel layouts
  • Understanding of protection relay principles and substation equipment
  • Knowledge of electrical codes, utility standards, and safety regulations
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering requirements and translate them into practical designs
  • Proven ability to work effectively with engineers, procurement teams, and field personnel
  • Strong organizational skills for managing multiple projects and deadlines
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, with ability to travel throughout the province and work at various locations as required

  • Flexibility to support field activities in different weather conditions, including occasional after-hours consultation during emergency or project needs
