Regulatory Specialist

Key Responsibilities
NL Hydro is seeking a Regulatory Specialist ("Specialist") to work as part of the Finance team. The successful candidate will play a key role to support regulatory and financial reporting processes. The Specialist will be accountable for regulatory components of financial reporting including management and oversight of the accounting framework required to report under both Regulatory and IFRS. The Specialist is required to maintain deferral mechanisms and to manage the completion of budget, forecast, actual and variance analysis associated with Regulatory deferrals and adjustments including all financial statement disclosures, audit requirements and regulatory requirements on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis. In addition, the Specialist will be responsible for calculating the financial impacts of energy projections and ensure alignment with forecasts and budgets, variance analysis and reporting as required. This is a critical activity for regulatory filings including GRAs, budgets, forecasts and other regulatory mechanisms.
The Specialist will play a key role in applications to the Regulator including but not limited to General Rate Applications and including the completion of all Regulatory finance schedules and evidence to support GRA applications. The incumbent will conduct quality assurance on filings and analysis to respond to requests for information as part of regulatory processes. The Specialist also manages the completion of certain financial reports to support regulatory compliance and plays a key role in the completion of annual or other reviews conducted on behalf of the Regulator. The Specialist will also be responsible for leading projects and studies that support regulatory filings and the associated evidence.
The incumbent is expected to exercise a considerable level of autonomy in this role. You are responsible for your personal safety and that of co-workers by observing and promoting the company's Safety and Health Program and responsible for any environmental aspects of the job and performing work in an environmentally responsible manner.
What We're Looking For:
- Strong, team based, interpersonal skills;
- Ability to research, analyze and interpret information from a variety of sources and subject areas with a particular emphasis on regulatory compliance and accounting;
- Excellent writing skills and ability to write comprehensive reports;
- Strong Organizational skills;
- Excellent analytical and problem solving ability;
- Strong oral communication skills;
- Experience with financial models and planning;
- In depth knowledge of GAAP/IFRS and Regulatory Accounting;
- Proficiency in the use of computer applications and knowledge of Corporate systems such as JDE and the Microsoft suite, in particular, Excel and PowerPoint.
What You'll Need:
A University degree with a professional accounting/financial designation combined with at least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in financial analysis and/or accounting or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. Experience related to the Electric Utility industry is considered an asset for this position.
