The Cancer Care Program has a provincial mandate to deliver cancer care to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. It operates at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre (DHBMCC) in St. John's, and regional cancer centers in Corner Brook, Gander and Grand Falls. The DHMBCC has four linear accelerators, an orthovoltage unit, an HDR Brachytherapy unit, two CT-Simulators, Eclipse Treatment Planning System and ARIA Radiation Oncology information system. The cancer center in Corner Brook will be a satellite site with one linear accelerator and one CT simulator and will be offering a full complement of radiation therapy techniques.
Job Summary
The Radiation Therapist IIB is responsible for:
Supervising Radiation Therapists and Students in their assigned work area and acting in a leadership capacity.
Being a technical expert and advisor for the CT Simulator. As the technical expert, they are responsible for; auditing and building CT protocols, working with Technical Site Groups on implementing new immobilization equipment or simulation techniques, consultation regarding third party use of the CT Simulator, reviewing and evaluation of existing contracts and renewals of supplies and equipment, inventory control, and making recommendations on purchase of equipment/supplies.
Bringing clinical issues to the Radiation Therapist III.
Using their knowledge and clinical competence in CT to allow for more accurate simulation, planning, treatment, and delivery of radiation.
Providing radiation services and patient care in accordance with established policies and standards of professional practice for radiation therapy.
Providing radiation services through treatment planning, delivery and follow up.
Providing individualized radiation therapy simulation, planning, and treatments to patients in consultation with the oncology team.
Administering prescribed Radiation Treatments using complex equipment and clinical judgment, while following departmental policies, procedures and standard of care.
Using medical imaging equipment including X-ray, CT, and Ultrasound.
Performing Image Fusion with CT, MRI and/or PET to ensure treatments are delivered accurately.
Monitoring the progress of the patient and suggesting amendments to treatment plans when necessary.
Providing patient care through patient assessment, reviewing patient history, educating patients and families on treatment process and side effects, and recommending self-care measures.
Assisting patients in the interpretation of the treatment plan and evaluating the patient?s understanding of treatment and side effects.
Ensuring that patients and their families are aware of services available in the Provincial Cancer Care Program and in the community.
Consulting with and/or referring patients to members of other health care disciplines as required.
Consulting with Dosimetrists, Medical Physicists and Radiation Oncologists on optimal treatment parameters.
Maintaining patient records by collecting and documenting information related to the patient and health care history, radiation therapist assessment, symptom and side effect management, and patient and family education.
Performing quality assurance checks of equipment according to established policies and procedures, maintaining records of checks and taking appropriate action on equipment malfunctions.
Performing quality assurance checks of Patient Electronic Medical Record by following established policies and procedures, maintaining records of checks and taking appropriate action when necessary.
Conducting research and consultation with Radiation Therapy Equipment Vendors for the procurement of patient immobilization equipment.
Developing policies and standard operating procedures for CT simulation and contrast administration.
Developing general CT Simulation protocols and scanning protocols
Radiation Therapists report to the Division Manager of Radiation Therapy.
Job Demands

Regularly lifts or moves objects less than 10 lbs. (i.e. supplies, linens, charts, etc.), and occasionally objects between 10-50 lbs. (i.e. lead shielding, supplies, equipment, breast board, immobilization devices, and lifting beam modifying equipment), requiring strength and endurance.
Pushes and pulls patients over 50 lbs. in order to position/reposition them to perform treatments.
Regularly stands, walks, or sits for extended periods when performing procedures/treatments, or reviewing data on monitors.
Constantly performs fine finger or precision work using various controls on machines requiring very controlled movements.
Uses hand tools that require accurate control and steadiness. Gross motor skills are also required to reposition patients.
Job Qualifications
Graduation from an approved/accredited degree/diploma in Radiation Therapy is required.
Current and continuing registration with the NL Council of Health Professionals as a Medical Radiation Technologist in Radiation Therapy is required.
CAMRT CT Radiation Therapy Certificate is required.
Current and continuing BLS certification is required.
Minimum of five years? experience within the last seven years working as a Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) is required.
Strong knowledge and expertise in radiation therapy best practices.
