The Jewellery Technician is responsible for the maintenance, organization, and supervision of a limited-access jewellery studio within the Craft Division. Reporting to the Manager, Studio Services, this role provides technical expertise, ensures health and safety compliance, and supports faculty, students, and staff in both traditional and digital fabrication practices. The position also involves coordination with suppliers, contractors, alumni, and the wider jewellery community.
- Provide specialized technical support in jewellery and hollowware processes; troubleshoot equipment and technology issues.
- Maintain all Jewellery equipment, hand tools, and teaching aids; implement preventative maintenance schedules.
- Support digital fabrication processes, including 3D printing, laser cutting, Rhino/Adobe workflows.
- Conduct health and safety orientations; enforce and promote safe practices and evolving protocols.
- Oversee procurement, inventory, and supplier relationships; manage budgets and maintain accounting records.
- Track and administer sales for course-related services (e.g., electroplating, casting, 3D printing, findings).
- Supervise and train student assistants; coordinate evening technician schedules
- Maintain the studio's digital presence, including Brightspace LMS, social media, and digital tool library.
- Liaise with faculty to align technical support with curriculum and research priorities.
- Fabricate specialty tools, stands, or benches as required.
- Prepare and distribute course materials and provide demonstrations for students.
- Monitor and document studio infrastructure, waste disposal, and chemical use.
- A BFA with concentration in jewellery/metals (or equivalent), with 3-5 years of related experience.
- Technical proficiency in jewellery and hollowware processes, including maintenance and use of Jewellery machinery.
- Knowledge of digital fabrication (3D printing, laser cutting, Rhino, Adobe) considered a strong asset.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently in a busy, noisy environment with frequent interruptions.
- Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety issues, with ability to integrate evolving safety protocols.
- Experience in a post-secondary educational environment considered an asset.
