Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home is a non-profit, 110-bed long-term care facility situated next door to the Dartmouth General Hospital. We provide quality, resident-focused services for seniors and their families in a holistic, home-like environment through dedicated, caring staff, volunteers and community partners. Oakwood Terrace is a 42-year-old nursing home owned and operated by Dartmouth Senior Care Society, a non-profit organization that is focused on putting the people we look after at the forefront of decisions whilst ensuring we look after the employees who help us attain this goal. With the support of the Government of Nova Scotia, the organization will be opening a replacement home for 144 residents in 2028/29.
Job Summary:
As a Rehabilitation Assistant, you will play a vital role in helping residents maintain and improve their physical function and quality of life. Working under the guidance of a licensed PT and OT, you will assist with therapeutic interventions, document resident progress, and maintain a safe, supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement PT/OT treatment programs including exercises, ambulation, and group classes.
- Assist with equipment maintenance and cleaning (e.g., wheelchairs, slings, therapeutic devices).
- Observe and report changes in residents' conditions.
- Support residents in achieving therapy goals and maintaining independence.
- Document treatments and responses in electronic health records.
- Maintain cleanliness and inventory of therapy areas and supplies.
- Ensure resident confidentiality and promote a respectful, person-centered care approach.
Qualifications and Skills:
- High School Diploma (Grade 12).
- Graduate of a recognized Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy Assistant program
OR one of the following:
- Kinesiologist (degree in Kinesiology).
- Unlicensed Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.
- Equivalent experience in a long-term care setting.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow treatment plans and work independently.
- Compassionate, respectful, and resident-centered approach.
- Physically able to meet job demands (heavy lifting, resident transfers, etc.).
- Ability to work in a dynamic and collaborative team environment.
- Consistent attendance and reliability.
- Familiarity with body mechanics and infection control practices.
