JOB PURPOSE
Collaborates with and reports to the Nurse Manager of 2North. This is a rotating position which includes time as the Clinical Resource Nurse and a Registered nurse on the unit. The successful candidate participates directly and indirectly in the organization, planning, monitoring and evaluation of total nursing care for patients. They shall research trends, best practices and maintain accreditation ROP and Professional Practice Standards awareness. This nurse will act as a clinical resource to staff, and will participate in the development, delivery and monitoring of staff education, orientation, and Quality Improvement initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains working knowledge of skills to work within units acting as a resource and providing nursing consultation to ensure patient and staff safety.
- Possess the specialized nursing knowledge and clinical skills necessary to provide care and supervise staff in the care of patients. Has strong clinical skills for medical patients, and geriatrics.
- Identifies patient care needs and excellent problem-solving skills.
- Provides professional nursing care to meet expected patient outcomes.
- Assesses standards of practice on each unit and ensures compliance with best practice.
- Conducts daily planning, organization, coordination, and evaluation of clinical nursing practice and works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager, the Nurse Mentor and Nursing Practice Coordinator to meet unit needs.
- Assists and supports effective patient huddles and safety huddles.
- Produces informational documents and presents in groups and forums.
- Works closely with respective Nurse Managers and Link Nurses to plan, coordinate and monitor the specific clinical skill sets of nursing staff.
- Plans and coordinates continuing education and works with nurse manager to organize, oversee, and support new staff during orientation; serves as educator/resource for ongoing learning specific to areas of practice.
- Monitors staff compliance with completing Compulsory Programs annually and works with Nurse Manager to identify new learning needs for effective delivery of quality care.
- Coordinates and participates in staff education related to new techniques, equipment and services and collaborates with the nurse manager in developing evidence- based policies and protocols.
- Participates in research designed to generate an organized body of nursing knowledge, disseminates research findings, and applies them in practice.
- Encourages staff to become mentors to new staff, and to participate in preceptorship programs.
- Participates in committees as assigned by the Nurse Manager and/or Administrative Director.
- Supports positive work environment by foster trust and open communication with staff, manager, and the health care team, by modeling professional behavior and practice.
- Assumes responsibility of delegated duties as assigned by the nurse manager in her absence.
- Provides support and guidance to staff with good decision-making skills in the care of acute medical and surgical patients.
- Provides consultation, guidance and advice for complex clinical situations acting as a direct leader/supervisor to staff in support of quality care provision and Care Plan development for patients with complex and challenging health care needs.
- Assumes responsibility for professional development and contributes to the professional growth of interdisciplinary team members.
- Participates in peer review and other means of evaluation to assure the quality of nursing practice.
- Participates in incident report review, clinical audits, and other unit Quality Improvement activities/initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrates clinical expertise in the care provided to populations served by Medical/Surgical Stepdown, Geriatrics and Rehabilitation units. This expertise includes assessing and identifying problems, planning, and intervening in and evaluating care; and participating in the interdisciplinary plan of care.
- Progressive nursing experience in which leadership and teaching abilities have been demonstrated, with exceptional competency in assessing the health of acute Medical, Surgical, and Geriatric patients including planning, and providing appropriate nursing care.

- Bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent experience.
- Active registration with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick
- BLS certification.
- Five (5) years recent related experience in acute medical & surgical and geriatric nursing.
- Demonstrated adherence to privacy legislation and confidentiality policy to ensure all patient, business, financial and employee information is accessed on as needed to know basis.
The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the Provincial Collective Agreement.
