The Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation's mission is to walk alongside people and communities-enhancing prevention, mitigation, preparedness, adaptation, and transformation-to strengthen their efforts in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. The Preparedness team creates and implements programs aimed at enhancing awareness and skills related to emergency preparedness. These programs focus on improving resources and fostering relationships at the individual household, organizational, and community levels so that Canadians and their communities are better equipped to handle climate emergencies and disruptions.
In this role, you will:
- Assist in the design, planning, and execution of emergency preparedness programs in collaboration with teams and stakeholders.
- Ensure emergency preparedness program activities are culturally appropriate, aligned with best practices, and responsive to community needs.
- Support emergency preparedness program teams with resources, tools, and technical guidance to enhance service delivery.
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners, and other stakeholders.
- Track emergency preparedness program activities, outputs, and outcomes to ensure effective delivery impact.
- Support emergency preparedness program performance assessments, integrating lessons learned into future planning.
- Assist in preparing reports for internal and external stakeholders, such as donors and other funders, highlighting progress, challenges, and best practices
- Work with relevant teams to develop new resources when gaps are identified.
- Make recommendations to improve Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation program procedures, processes, or guidelines, and support the development of new program opportunities or proposals.
- Stay informed on relevant policies, guidelines, and best practices in community or humanitarian programming, and contribute to continuous learning and improvement within the team.
What we are looking for :
- Qualifications include a minimum of 4-7 years of experience and a 3-year college diploma or university degree in emergency management, social work, social sciences, psychology, health, or a related field and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. May require technical certifications or professional designations.
- Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, community organizations, and funding partners.
- Familiarity with program monitoring, evaluation, and reporting frameworks.
- Understanding of program development, implementation, and best practices in community-based services.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and SharePoint.
- Ability to identify, investigate and analyze problems, identify root causes and risks, and apply technical, functional and organizational knowledge to develop solutions.
- Communication skills, diplomacy and empathy to interpret information and deliver advice, clarify client or stakeholder needs, offer solutions, and resolve escalations in new or somewhat sensitive situations.
- Fluency in English is required; French is an asset.
Working Conditions :
- This role is a response and operational profile that requires scheduled travel, deployment and in-community in-person presence
- The role includes fieldwork, deployment to emergency operations, and office-based work during non-deployment period
- Some domestic or international travel to generally safe locations; exposure to moderate adverse conditions requiring attention to personal safety
- Work requires the ability to work to multiple, conflicting deadlines.
- Work requires interactions with clients who may be agitated, or are experiencing stressful situations
- In a large-scale emergency, where staff numbers are compromised or additional resources are required provide disaster relief
