Join our Team as a Junior Transportation Engineering Technologist - Make a Difference in Our Community!

The Junior Engineering Transportation will work closely with staff throughout the City to provide input relating to the transportation network including the coordination of activities planned in the municipal Rights-of-Way, gathers and maintains information about the network and collects data to input into the Traffic Calming process. Additionally, the role shares planned closures throughout the network with affected stakeholders and works closely with businesses and special event organizers on activities that will impact the transportation network or Right-of-Way. Typical examples of regular ongoing relationships include shipping companies, business groups, construction companies, engineering consultants, NBDTI, building managers, special events organizers, communications, and Canada Post.

The role works closely with Transportation, Project, and Development Engineers, within Engineering, on advancing projects and initiatives. Additionally, the role works with operational staff within Engineering & Operations including Roadway Operations, H2O, Transit & Parking, Parks & Trees, Building Services, and staff from various Departments throughout the City including Planning & Development, Recreation, Tourism & Culture, Police, City Clerks Office, Legal and Communications.

Qualifications required:

  • Accredited Survey or Civil Technology Course
  • Interest in traffic, municipal surveying, building or civil work.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and academic training may also be considered.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications and SharePoint.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu, and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with GIS applications and GeoNB.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to speak in both official languages would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of traffic management, surveying, development site plans, municipal infrastructure, servicing, and Engineering design.
  • Applied knowledge of NB WATCM, and the MUTCDC is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class V drivers license.

What You'll Do:

  • Respond to requests from businesses, contractors, and consultants on impacts to the Right-of-Way and provide permits for vehicle and equipment moves and closures.
  • Provide technical support to Transportation, Development and Project Engineers on related projects.
  • Provide technical support for transportation network closures and detours for Capital Development, NBDTI, and Operational projects.
  • Provide ongoing technical support to advancing the City's Special Events programs.
  • Collect and maintain transportation network data including counts, videos, safety concerns, collisions, and provide inputs to the traffic calming process and safety issues.
  • Receive, prioritize, and respond to requests and complaints from the public and elected officials.
  • Review construction plans for potential impacts to the road network and work with contractors, consultants, and developers to find solutions to issues.

  • Ability to understand a situation by breaking it into smaller pieces and/or tracing the implications in a step-by-step manner.
  • Identify issues or problems and develop strategies, ideas, and opportunities for resolving them.
  • Prioritize, coordinate, and manage mulitple competing priorities.
  • Knowledge of traffic management, surveying, development site plans, municipal infrastructure, servicing, and Engineering design.
