AI Productivity Lab Director
18-month contract · Halifax HQ with regional travel · Competitive compensation

The Role

Volta is establishing an AI Productivity Lab to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Atlantic Canada convert artificial-intelligence potential into real efficiency gains. As Director you will build and run this program from the ground up-shaping the continuous-intake model, guiding companies through discovery and delivery, and demonstrating how targeted AI adoption can lift regional productivity and economic growth. You will work directly with executives and operators inside SMEs, select external specialists when needed, and ensure every engagement is scoped, executed, and measured against clear business outcomes. Reporting to the CEO, you will operate with significant autonomy while keeping government partners and other stakeholders fully informed of progress and impact.

Who You Are

You are a seasoned product leader with a decade or more of experience bringing technology initiatives from idea to impact. Although you no longer write code, you grasp the technical realities of modern software and AI well enough to challenge assumptions and set realistic expectations. You are at ease in boardrooms and on factory floors, able to translate complex concepts for diverse audiences and to drive change in environments where resources are tight and skepticism is high. Your approach blends rigorous customer discovery with data-driven decision-making, and you have the diplomacy and persistence required to keep multiple partners aligned on a common goal.

Success in This Role Looks Like

Within months, the Lab is running a steady pipeline of high-potential SME projects, each with a documented baseline and a clear plan to measure productivity improvement. Over the 18-month term, a portfolio of engagements demonstrates tangible efficiency gains, credible economic impact, and a repeatable playbook Volta can scale. Government stakeholders, SME leaders, and technology partners regard the program as a practical model for turning AI ambition into bottom-line results, and they recognize you as the driving force behind it.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Program Design & Intake
Develop and refine a continuous-intake process that identifies SME pain points, prioritizes opportunities with the highest productivity upside, and ensures readiness for AI-enabled change.
  2. Discovery & Scoping
Lead structured discovery sessions to translate business challenges into well-defined AI initiatives, articulating objectives, constraints, and success metrics that all parties understand.
  3. Delivery Orchestration
Assemble and coordinate external specialists and internal resources, manage timelines and risks, and keep each project moving from pilot to adoption without losing sight of the business case.
  4. Measurement & Learning
Establish lightweight but rigorous methods to capture baseline performance, track deltas, and synthesize lessons learned into a living playbook that improves with every engagement.
  5. Stakeholder Management
Maintain clear, timely communication with SME executives, Volta leadership, and funding partners, ensuring expectations are aligned and progress is transparent.
  6. Ecosystem Evangelism
Convert successful projects into case studies and presentations that inspire additional SMEs, attract future funding, and position Atlantic Canada as a leader in practical AI productivity.

Apply today at [email protected] and help us shape the future of entrepreneurship and AI innovation in Atlantic Canada.
