General Manager

Fogo Island Co-operative Society Limited (FICSL) is seeking a dynamic, results oriented General Manager to help lead our operations, support organizational growth, and drive our long-term strategic goals. Working closely with the CEO and leadership team, the General Manager will foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
About Us
Founded in 1967, FICSL is the largest and oldest fisheries co-operative in North America. Based in one of the continent's oldest fishing communities, we operate multi-species fish processing facilities in Seldom, Fogo, and Joe Batt's Arm. With over 400 direct and indirect employees, a retail store, marine center, and other assets on Fogo Island, the Co-op is deeply embedded in the Island's economy, culture, and identity.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure long term organizational stability through effective resource allocation and team leadership
- Negotiate business deals, partnerships, and supply agreements with harvesting enterprises
- Lead with strategic vision and operational accountability
- Develop and implement strategies to drive growth, profitability, and sustainability
- Oversee financial performance, including forecasting, budgeting, and reporting
- Analyze operations to identify trends, improve cost control, and uncover new opportunities
- Promote a collaborative, high performing, team based environment
- Build and maintain strong relationships with employees, unions, and local stakeholders
- Foster new business and client relationships to expand revenue streams
- Provide leadership across human resources and operations functions
- Represent FICSL at trade shows and industry events (domestic and international travel required)
Qualifications
- A university degree in business, commerce, economics, or related field
- 10+ years of progressive management experience, or an equivalent mix of education and industry experience
- Proven leadership in operations, HR, and revenue growth
- Strong governance experience working with CEOs, boards, regulators, and unions
- Demonstrated financial acumen with P&L oversight and budget management
- Industry experience in fisheries or marine sectors considered an asset
- Willingness and eligibility to travel nationally and internationally
- A strong desire to live and work on Fogo Island
