Job Information and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Financial Reporting & Accounting, the Accountant Analyst:
- Supports the University's financial reporting and accounting, ensuring that information is captured, recorded and reported accurately with a specific focus on the university's Health Pathways Initiative (HPI) partnership with the provincial government. Requires thorough knowledge of financial, fund and managerial accounting, financial systems, internal controls, financial analysis, and reporting as well as effective communication.
- Prepares journal entries to record, correct and redistribute financial transactions including sales and miscellaneous revenue, deferred revenue, interfund transfers, prepaid expenses, accrued receivables and liabilities, investments, debt, leases, grant overhead, bank charges, wire transfers, pre-authorized payments, internal charges and allocated costs, capital assets, capital project funding, amortization, and other transactions.
- Prepares monthly reconciliations and analyses pertaining but not limited to accounts receivables, payables and banking
- Revenue Generating Operations - supports departmental interpretations of policies, procedures, regulatory regulations and provides advice regarding data collection, reporting, cash controls, and accounting to managers and staff in several revenue generating operations to ensure accurate, timely and complete recording and analysis of transactions.
- Be responsible for the post award phase of research administration which includes implementing the research grant, monitoring expenses, reporting financial progress, billing and completing the closeout process of a research grant.
- Reviews month end departmental research grant, and/or special project transaction reports for accuracy and completeness, Follows-up and resolves any identified errors or budget problems.
- Analyses cash flow to identify specific cash requirements and determine the amount of cash required to cover outstanding and forecasted disbursements.
- Acts as a continuous improvement champion for the department and the university as support to the Manager, External Reporting and individually
Experience and Education Requirements
To be the successful Accountant Analyst you will have:
- Undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Commerce or Business Administration. Advanced education in accounting and financial analysis would be an asset.
- Preference for candidates enrolled in the CPA Program.
- Minimum two years directly related experience.
- Thorough knowledge of financial, fund and managerial accounting, financial systems e.g., Banner Finance, CRM Advance System, prior experience in a fund accounting environment, internal controls, financial analysis, and reporting is required.
- Understanding of current accounting policies, procedures and practices.
- Above average interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in the use of Accounting and Microsoft Office software is required.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
