POSITION

Natoaganeg First Nation is committed to providing their children with a healthy and inclusive learning environment where all students can achieve their academic potential. Natoaganeg School is an independent community school focused on providing quality, culturally focused education to the children of a Mi'gmaq First Nation, aged four through to grade eight. Reporting to the School Principal, teachers facilitate the delivery of high-quality and culturally focused education.

DUTIES

  • Create instructional resources for use in the classroom
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities and lesson plans
  • Create positive educational climate in which students can optimally learn
  • Communicate with parents as needed
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development sessions.
  • Grade assignments while providing timely feedback and perform other administrative duties as needed
  • Keep, with care and accuracy, records of pupil attendance, and inquire into and note all cases of tardiness or absence
  • Create projects designed to enhance curricular goals
  • Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served
  • Exemplify and encourage in each pupil the highest regard for First Nations culture and community
  • Develop professional relationships with other agencies and programs
  • Work with program coordinators to ensure initiatives are being met
  • Provide additional support after school hours when necessary
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by invoking approved disciplinary procedures following PBIS model
  • Maintaining, under the direction of the principal, proper order and discipline while on duty in the school, on the school grounds, and including all co-curricular and extracurricular activities related to the school
  • Ensure that all reasonable safety procedures are carried out in courses in activities for which the teacher is responsible.
  • Make an effort to participate in extracurricular activities
  • Work cooperatively with paraprofessionals and other support staff
  • Any other task as assigned by the principal

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Bachelor of Education Degree or equivalent
  • Valid New Brunswick Teaching Certificate
  • Previous teaching experience is a definite asset
  • Completion of and possession of valid CPR and First Aid Certificate
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Mi'gmaq/Indigenous people and Mi'gmaq/Indigenous culture is an asset
  • Criminal record check and vulnerable sector check required
  • Knowledge of N.B. Curriculum and the ability to use various technologies for teaching
  • Training/experience working with children on the Autism spectrum is an asset
