The Office of the Registrar is the registry for the Court of Appeal and provides support to the Chief Justice and Justices of the Court of Appeal. In addition, this office manages the registries of the Court of King's Bench, processing all adoptions, bankruptcies and divorces filed in the Province. The Registrar's Office facilitates the registration and distribution of all reciprocal enforcement of maintenance orders received from and transmitted to participating states, countries, territories and provinces.

The Registrar Services Branch in the Department of Justice and Public Safety has a full-time employment opportunity available for a Deputy Registrar of the Court of Appeal and the Court of King's Bench of New Brunswick. This is a lawyer position to fulfil judicial, quasi-judicial and legal functions necessary for the effective operation of the Court of Appeal and the Court of King's Bench.

What you will do
Reporting to the Registrar, the successful candidate will be responsible to assist the Registrar in all areas of statutory and administrative responsibility for the Registrar's office. The Deputy Registrar will assist in maintaining a permanent registry for the Court of Appeal and the Court of King's Bench (Divorce, Adoption, and Bankruptcy).

The Deputy Registrar is also responsible to provide advice and direction to the clerks and Administrators of the Court of King's Bench, give procedural interpretation regarding the Rules of Court to solicitors and the public, ensure the proper function of the Inter-jurisdictional Support Orders Act, represent New Brunswick on the Federal/Provincial/Territorial interjurisdictional Support Sub-committee, and other duties as may be assigned.

This is a legislated position pursuant to the Judicature Act requiring the exercise of all duties, powers and authority of a Deputy Registrar of the Court of Appeal and Court of King's Bench prescribed by any Act, Regulation or the Rules of Court. This includes conducting hearings and adjudicating matters pursuant to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Rules of Court.

Need to have (their essential skills and qualifications)

  • A degree from a law school of recognized standing and membership or eligibility for membership in the Law Society of New Brunswick;
  • At least two years as a practicing lawyer;
  • Successful candidates will be required to undergo a criminal history clearance and security clearance check.

Written and spoken competence in English and French is required, please state your language capability.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The following operational requirement(s) is also required:

  • Occasional evening or weekend work;
  • Occasional travel required.

Nice to Have (their asset qualifications)

  • Thorough understanding of the Rules of Court of New Brunswick and the Judicature Act;
  • Detailed and comprehensive knowledge of civil procedure and criminal procedure;
  • Understanding of the Divorce Act, Inter-jurisdictional Support Orders Act, Child and Youth Well-Being Act, Official Languages Act, rules of evidence and related jurisprudence;
  • General knowledge of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act;
  • Experience in court administration.

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Wage
$114 868 to $137 566 annually, depending on education and experience.

Work environment

  • Office location: Justice Building, 427 Queen Street, Fredericton, N.B.
  • Standard hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15-4:30
