The Opportunity:

Port Saint John is seeking an experienced Marine Operations Officer to join our team! In this position, you'll be at the heart of the action playing a critical leadership role in overseeing vessel movements, and ensuring regulatory compliance with the Canada Marine Act, Canada Shipping Act, and Dangerous Goods regulations. From coordinating vessel arrivals and departures to enforcing navigational safety protocols, your expertise will help maintain smooth port operations.

Responsibilities

Your Focus:

  • Coordinate and monitor vessel traffic in collaboration with internal teams and service providers.
  • Review, process, authorize, and maintain records for port operational requests.
  • Issue approvals to terminal operators for marine-related projects and activities.
  • Conduct inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Oversee and manage safe movements of dangerous goods through the port in line with applicable national and international regulations.
  • Oversee safe and efficient daily operations and maintenance of the port's marine facility, including berth allocation and support services for all users of the marine facility.
  • Assist in reviewing, maintaining, and improving marine operating procedures and compliance programs, contributing to internal policy updates in response to regulatory changes and industry best practices.
  • Act as a liaison ensuring all stakeholders including pilots, terminal operators, fishers, shipping agents, and federal agencies are advised of key marine operations.
  • Collaborate with the Port Security Officer to ensure marine emergency response readiness including, participating in regular drills, audits, and exercises for marine contingency and business continuity planning.
Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Marine Transportation, Nautical Science, Marine Safety, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in marine operations, port authority functions, vessel traffic management, or regulatory enforcement.
  • Seagoing experience and/or marine officer certification (Master or Chief Mate) considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian marine legislation: Canada Marine Act, Canada Shipping Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act.
  • Familiarity with the IMDG Code, port operations, and marine safety protocols.
  • Must be eligible to obtain Marine Transportation Security Clearance through Transport Canada.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and emergency callouts.
