This position is located inIqaluit, NU and reports to the Deputy Chief Safety Officer. The Safety Officer providesservices to employers, workers, and the public and is appointed under thelegislation as a Safety Officer. In compliance with the Northwest Territories(NT) and Nunavut (NU) Safety Acts, Explosives Use Act, and the associatedRegulations (Acts & Regs), and fosters the vision, mission and values ofthe Workers Safety and Compensation Commission.
The Acts and Regulationsgive the Officer the legislative authority to enter worksites to assesscompliance with the Acts & Regs, to conduct inspections and investigatedangerous occurrences, serious injuries or fatalities, work refusals andemployee claims of discrimination.
Here are a few ways you will make a difference:
- Conducting worksiteinspections, make assessments, review, and evaluate Occupational Health andSafety (OHS) Programs.
- Promoting the internalresponsibility system through education and awareness using communication,diplomacy skills, and knowledge.
- Identifying emerging trendsin workplace health and safety issues and use this information to recommendWSCC awareness programs.
- Traveling to communities inthe Northwest Territories and Nunavut to conduct inspections and ensurecompliance with legislation.
- Assisting other WSCCdivisions to proactively promote cooperation in matters of occupational healthand safety.
What you bring to the role:
- A certificate, or degree,in Occupational Health and Safety from an accredited educational institution.
- A minimum of three (3)years experience working in the health and safety field.
- A valid class 5 driverslicense.
- Demonstrated knowledge ofSafety Acts and Regulations, industry standards, and other related acts, codes,and regulations.
- Experience with conductinginvestigations.
- Ability to effectivelyorganize and prioritize workload and adapt to changing priorities.

Equivalencies: May be considered based ona one-year of directly related experience equivalent to one year of educationor one year of education for one year of experience.
