The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Fixed Term Senior Process Assistant, Local 2020-05 to join our Clarabelle Mill Team in Sudbury, ON.

This is a 18 month-fixed term position covered under the Collective Agreement between Vale and the Local 2020-05 United Steelworkers.

This role is primarily an individual contributor role that provides advice and specialized skills to support the Operations and Maintenance departments in the area of process technology. This role adds value by delivering technical services and technical support for the plant in a safe, accurate, timely, and cost-effective manner. Such work involves plant troubleshooting, process and sample analysis, quality control, process improvement, and related research and development (R&D) activities.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Conduct metallurgical and analytical tasks including sampling, data collection, analysis, and communication of findings to relevant teams.
  • Investigate and perform root cause analysis on metallurgical process issues.
  • Support process improvement and R&D initiatives, including planning, design, coordination, and execution of projects.
  • Assist with commissioning, testing, and maintenance of new or modified plant equipment and processes.
  • Monitor and enhance plant product quality, maintain analytical instruments, and train personnel on their proper use.
  • Manage lab equipment and supplies, administer technical databases, and contribute to safety and continuous learning in mineral processing.

About You

Education:

  • Diploma in Metallurgical, Mineral processing or Chemical Engineering Technology or Chemistry, Metallurgy or Mineral processing. Relevant University degree is an asset.

Experience:

  • Up to two years' relevant experience in an industrial operating environment. Experience with mineral processing is an asset.

Skills:

  • General knowledge of sampling theory, analytical chemistry, mineral processing, process instrumentation, process control, and laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to use standard mineral processing lab equipment (pH probes, lab flotation cells, etc.), equipment for process sampling, field measurements and sample prep equipment (rifflers, pulverizers, sieve screens). Experience with online XRF analyzers is an asset.
  • College level numerical/mathematical skills, including statistics and control charts. Prepare and analyze process data. Develop simple mass balances around metallurgical processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Familiarity with process Information Management Systems (PI, Illuminator) and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is an asset.
  • Required to perform routine professional or technical tasks, procedures, or calculations requiring basic knowledge in one or more specialty areas in chemical/metallurgical engineering technology.
  • Required to use or have knowledge of basic equipment or hand tools (e.g. laboratory equipment). Use and understand equipment for process sampling, field measurements and solution analysis.
  • Familiar with fundamental mineral processing equipment (flotation cells, rod mills, ball mills, cyclones).
  • Familiar with what factors affect the control of a mineral processing plant and processes (pH, density, collectors, froth level, etc.).
