Construction Lead (Senior Civil Technician)
One (1) Regular position
Mactaquac, New Brunswick, Canada
Competition # E21951-2025

At NB Power we are a team, committed to offering the best customer experience, ensuring energy security, and accelerating a sustainable clean energy transition. Why? Because we're New Brunswickers too, we care about our customers and future generations, and today we are actively looking for a new member to join us.

The Mactaquac Generating Station began generating electricity in 1968. Since the 1980s, concrete portions of the hydro station have been affected by a chemical reaction called alkali-aggregate reaction. The reaction causes the concrete to swell and crack and has required substantial annual maintenance and repairs. NB Power is proposing a project to ensure the station can operate to its intended 100-year lifespan with a modified approach to maintenance and adjusting and replacing equipment and concrete over time.

As part of the Mactaquac Life Achievement Project, the Senior Civil Technician is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all on-site construction activities, ensuring they align with contract documents, drawings, and specifications. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that the project is executed safely, on time, on budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Key functions include:

  • Oversee day-to-day construction activities, ensure alignment with project scope, schedule, safety, and quality standards, and coordinate site logistics and stakeholder interfaces.
  • Track progress, maintain daily reporting, manage scope changes, support claims negotiations, and ensure accurate documentation and project controls.
  • Guide contractors and internal teams, develop direct reports, foster a high-performance culture, and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

Our ideal teammate will have:

  • Five years of experience in hydro generation or heavy industrial construction, including surveying with strong knowledge of construction contracts, drawings, codes, and specifications
  • Skilled in planning, scheduling, look-ahead coordination, and progress reporting
  • Proficient in managing field activities, contractor coordination, project controls, and change management
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership abilities, with experience mentoring or managing teams
  • Proficient with construction scheduling tools and Microsoft Office suite (Project, Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Design experience and PMP or equivalent project management certification are considered assets

An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be modified.

An Eligibility List generated from this competition may be used to fill future vacancies at the same level within a period of up to 12 months.

We care for our team, and as a member you will have access to:

  • Health & Dental plans that provide flexible options to meet your needs
  • Health Spending Account, allowing for further flexibility
  • New Brunswick Public Service Pension Plan, offering retirement financial security
  • Wellness options, including our Employee Family Assistance Program
  • Benefits that allow for financial protection in the event it is needed
  • Various options for paid or unpaid leaves
  • Representation of the IBEW Local 37 Union
  • Career development and growth throughout the organization
