Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Marketing & Communications Manager is responsible for the implementation of the organization's marketing strategies and external communications. The Marketing & Communications Manager directs the Graphic Designer and Digital Media Coordinator to create a positive image for Discovery Centre and is accountable for marketing activities to grow admission, membership, sponsorship, and event revenue.

The successful candidate should be extremely organized with great project management and marketing skills, have an ability to multitask independently with strong stakeholder and team communication skills. The candidate should have excellent creative and business writing skills, and an eye for design which strategically represents Discovery Centre in fun and creative ways. The Marketing & Communications Manager will represent Discovery Centre professionally in media interviews and in the community while collaborating with suppliers and partner organizations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Marketing:

  • Manage the use of the Discovery Centre brand on all internal and external channels including signage, promotional materials, website, social media, and advertising.
  • Manage all social media activities including content and creative development, promoting sales initiatives and events.
  • Manage procurement of social media content from other sources, scheduling, and execution.
  • Content development for website, social channels, advertising, reports etc.
  • Manage website design and content updates/ enhancements.
  • Monitor growth of social media and website following.
  • Investigate and implement digital marketing opportunities using programmatic or publisher direct.
  • Develop marketing plans to promote featured exhibits and other seasonal campaigns including paid and earned media.
  • Media buying and creative delivery for paid digital media, as well as traditional media placements such as radio, television, and out of home.
  • Manage ongoing media contract relationships and deliverables.
  • Manage the development and distribution of promotional and marketing materials including newsletters, brochures, and merchandise.
  • Support marketing efforts of special events, including adult events, exhibit openings, public and educational program events, as well as fundraising events.
  • Support events team with new ideas and promotion of ticketed events.
  • Support fundraising team with access to content development and creative services for use in proposals and sponsor recognition deliverables.
  • Support education team with access to content development and creative services in the development of branding and promotional material for educational programs, exhibits, and events.
  • Collaborate and in some cases lead the development of new initiatives and partnerships to increase revenues and support of Discovery Centre's mission.

Communications:

  • Coordinate media relations activities including media pitches, and news release development and distribution.
  • Coordinate media events/ photo opts.
  • Provide timely response to media inquiries.
  • Leverage partner organization relationships for distribution of announcements and marketing initiatives.

Operational:

  • Manage two staff members including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; and appraising performance.
  • Develop and manage the annual marketing budget.
  • Manage the marketing department's production process and weekly deliverables.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders and suppliers.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in marketing or public relations preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in marketing and communications.
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of marketing, sales, communications, and public relations activities.
  • Excellent business and creative writing skills.
  • Excellent internal and external communications skills.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in media relations activities including writing news releases and engaging media.
  • Excellent understanding of social media and how to manage and grow audiences for relevant channels.
  • Proven experience in marketing and securing partnerships and sponsorships, including developing professional sponsorship pitches to corporate and community partners.
  • Experience investigating and implementing digital marketing opportunities.
  • Art direction and graphic design capabilities required (i.e. canva & Adobe Suite)
  • Experience developing, supervising, and evaluating personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to think proactively to strategically identify and present new opportunities based on market trends and ROI.
  • Computer competency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, MailChimp, WordPress, and Google Suite.
  • Strong project management, time-management, and organizational skills.
