Environmental Specialists & Advisors

Hydro has openings for Specialist positions and Advisor positions with our Environment team. Our Environment team is a critical part of our organization's success, leading key responsibilities such as:
- Providing information and training to employees to enable them to implement appropriate environmental protection measures and maintain compliance with applicable legal and other requirements associated with their activities.
- You will assist in the development of processes and procedures to facilitate implementation of environmental emergency response programs, and environmental site assessment programs by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.
- You will be expected to review company plans, activities and procedures, to ensure compliance with permits, approvals, government regulations, and approved company commitments, to identify potential conflicts and complete environmental site inspections.
- Act as Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro's representative on selected Electricity Canada and Canadian Hydropower Association task groups, or other external committees involved in consultations and lobbying on environmental issues of interest to Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro;
- Undertake reviews of proposed or updated federal and provincial environmental legislation relating to environmental aspects of designated line of business activities and facilities and provide reports and analysis and advice to lines of business relating to compliance issues and requirements;
- Negotiate with regulatory agencies on possible solutions to environmental problems and compliance requirements;
- Prepare and/or review annual reports on sustainability, air emissions, spills and leaks reports as required Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro;
- Conduct audits and inspect the Corporation's facilities to ensure compliance with environmental legislation, regulations, guidelines, and standards.
What We're Looking For:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with a variety of personnel, and other industry participants, both internal and external;
- Strong written/verbal communication skills;
- Training in ISO 14001 - environmental management systems and environmental auditing processes would be an asset;
- Detailed knowledge of environmental legislation and industry standards;
- Supervisory experience would be an asset;
- Willingness to travel.
- Experience working with Microsoft Office.
What You'll Need:
At the Advisor Level:
- A three (3) year Environmental Technology or Engineering Technology Program.
- Completion of university courses in the natural sciences, as well as GIS experience, would be an asset.
- You have two (2) or more years of progressively responsible experience as an environmental professional. Detailed knowledge of environmental legislation and industry standards is required.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
At the Specialist Level:
- Bachelor of Science degree in biological, earth or environmental science. Graduate training (to M.Sc. level) is desirable;
- Minimum of five (5) years progressively responsible experience as an environmental professional;
- Environmental management experience in areas such as: environmental legislation, environmental management systems and environmental auditing processes;
- Experience in environmental site assessment and emergency response programs, including hazardous materials assessments and associated remediation programs;
- Experience developing and working within an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System;
- Consideration may be given to applicants with other levels of education combined with training and demonstrated experience in environmental management and sustainable development practices.
