The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries is seeking an individual to join the Livestock Sector Development Branch as a Ruminant Specialist, in Fredericton or Sussex.

The Livestock Sector Development Branch works with the livestock and livestock feed sectors to improve profitability, competitiveness, and sustainability through the provision of technical advisory services, industry liaison, regulatory role, adaptive research and implementation of strategic sector initiatives and programs to support economic development and growth.

As a member of the Livestock Sector Development Branch, and reporting to the Manager, the Specialist is responsible for: providing technical expertise and strategic leadership support to the beef and sheep sectors, including beef-on-dairy production and goat production; providing support related to animal health, nutrition, management, and best management production practices; and playing a role in technology transfer and extension services to help farmers improve and expand their operations. The Ruminant Specialist is also responsible for the promotion and delivery of departmental programming, including targeted programing for the beef and sheep sectors that promotes herd renewal, genetic enhancement, and handling programs.

The Specialist works closely with department staff to support the sectors providing guidance and leadership to regional Development Officers and Business Growth Officers, as well as farm organizations, various government departments and stakeholders, such as the New Brunswick Cattle Producers, the Canadian Cattle Association, Maritime Beef Council and the New Brunswick Sheep Breeders' Association. The Specialist will represent the department and branch in Federal, Provincial, and Territorial initiatives, and participate on national, provincial, and regional committees, as required. The Specialist also provides support and guidance to the Community Pasture Leaseholders, support to the department Food Processing Specialist in relation to abattoirs and Veterinarians in relation to animal health topics. The position will also support various other departmental initiatives and perform other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A Master's degree in Science with specialization in Agriculture or a closely related field, and a minimum of eight (8) years of directly related work experience in agriculture development.

OR

  • A Bachelor's degree in Science with specialization in Agriculture or a closely related field, and a minimum of ten (10) years of directly related work experience in agriculture development.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

The successful candidate must be eligible for membership in the New Brunswick Institute of Agrologists, and membership must be attained within six (6) months of appointment.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate experience in one or more of the following: program development and delivery; leading and mentoring staff; working with producers and producer groups; livestock production; land use planning; policy, report and strategy development; client service; regulatory oversight. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: travel within and outside of the province as required, including occasional overnight stays; work outside of the regular work hours, as required; represent the province on sector related issues at the inter-provincial and national level, as required; and possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent.

SALARY: $74,409.92 to $101,847.72 per annum

NOTE: In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.
