The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries (DAAF) is seeking an individual to join the Crop Sector Development Branch as a Crop Specialist, in Fredericton. Another DAAF office location may be considered.

As a member of the Crop Sector Development team and reporting to the section manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the vegetable, controlled environment agriculture, and organic sectors, throughout the province. Responsibilities include developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies, program development and delivery, and initiatives to strengthen and develop the vegetable, controlled environment agriculture, and organic sectors. The selected candidate will provide technical advice, recommendations and leadership in the development of these sectors, and will work with industry, stakeholders and departmental employees to improve competitiveness, address constraints to development, and promote sustainable growth within these sectors.

This position is responsible for advising the department, provincial government, and other agencies on policy and issues related to the vegetable, controlled environment agriculture, and organic sectors. The Specialist will keep up to date on new production and management practices, research, and emerging technologies affecting production. This position is also responsible for sharing information and new technologies by organizing conferences, workshops and field days, including preparing resources and technical fact sheets.

Responsibilities also include conducting, coordinating, and collaborating research, and understanding certification programs and regulatory requirements related to organic production and food safety. The Specialist will work in cooperation with regional employees, provincial specialists, and industry, and will represent he province, as required, at the inter-provincial and national level, on issues relating to the sectors.

This position will support various other departmental initiatives and perform other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A Master's degree in Science with specialization in agriculture or a related field; and a minimum of eight (8) years of directly related work experience in agriculture development.

OR

  • A Bachelor's degree in Science with specialization in agriculture or a related field; and a minimum of ten (10) years of directly related work experience in agricultural development.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

NOTE: In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.

The successful candidate must be eligible for membership in the New Brunswick Institute of Agrologists, and membership must be attained within six (6) months of appointment.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate experience in one or more of the following: technology transfer; networking; field research trials for evaluation and demonstration; working with agricultural producers and producer groups. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: travel within and outside of the province, including overnight stays, as required; work outside of the regular work hours, as required; work in agricultural environments which may include a variety of terrain and weather conditions; possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent.

SALARY: $74,409.92 to $101,847.72 per annum
