Our roadmap for the Path to 2030 is aligned with the province's Clean Power Plan. It's going to take a mix of energy solutions to enable us to reach 80% renewable energy. Together, we know we need to reach our climate goals while doing what's best for Nova Scotians -- balancing costs and ensuring that as your electricity gets greener, it stays reliable, too. The Eastern Clean Energy team plays a pivotal role in getting us there.

We are looking for a Field Safety Specialist to join our Eastern Energy Clean (ECEI) team. Reporting to the Manager Safety, the Field Safety Specialist is responsible for site monitoring of various projects, documenting observations, and ensuring contractor compliance with the occupational health and safety requirements, Nova Scotia Power Safety Program and the ECEI Safety Management System.

Note: this is a term position with an expected end date of December 2028.

Key elements of this role include:
  • Work toward an integrated approach to safety through continuous improvement of systems and processes.
  • Develop programs and initiatives to promote Zero Accident Mindset within the project (PMT and contractors).
  • Act as a Liaison with regulatory agencies.
  • Perform field safety observations, document and report on findings.
  • Measure the compliance of the project with the requirements of the Safety Program through auditing.
  • Provide coaching & counselling on safety related issues to the project.
  • Ensure the Safety Program meets or exceeds regulatory requirements.
  • Assist contractors in understanding and applying interpretations of safety regulations, policies, safety plans and rules.
  • Provide technical advice as it relates to safety.
  • Track safety performance and identify trends.
  • Facilitate meetings concerning safety initiatives.
  • Provide and develop safety related education to meet your customer's needs.
  • Attend management team meetings to ensure a consistent message is delivered.
  • Assist JOHSC Investigation teams in determining immediate and root factors associated with an incident and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
  • Work with other utilities and industries to improve safety in the workplace.
  • Respond immediately to site safety incidents, which may require overnight travel throughout Nova Scotia.

These skills will make you successful:

To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:

  • Diploma or trade certification in Health and Safety, Technical or Electrical field.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience working in an industrial environment preferably with the transmission and distribution of an electrical utility.

Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to read a GPS and navigate to site.
  • An understanding of risk assessment and risk management concepts.
  • Awareness of provincial and federal environmental assessment legislation, regulations, and processes.

  • Focus and a commitment to working safely and looking out for others.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and make independent decisions in a timely manner.
  • Possess a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License (Class 5 with 2 years minimum driving experience) and have a clean driver's abstract.
