About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the District Manager, the Engineer provides services required for the delivery of departmental programs. The Engineer performs duties as a specialist in the environment and environmental health field. The position requires extensive contact with professional and technical staff within the department along with other departments, governments, academic institutions, and industries.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Participating in the review of applications for approval through the review and analysis of engineering reports, proposals, plans and specifications on projects with environmental and environmental health implications.
  • Drafting terms and conditions for such projects. Examples include industrial and mining facilities, watercourse alterations, municipal water, sewage and solid waste infrastructure.
  • Review the design and sometimes leads the design of on-site sewage disposal systems, assessments of land suitability for subdivision development and for individual lots in subdivisions.
  • Evaluat the design and site selection for various facilities such as central water supply treatment and distribution systems, sewage collection treatment and disposal, solid waste disposal, and complex industrial processes.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental legislation through the review of data submitted as a requirement of approvals.
  • Coordinate and oversee special projects, as needed.
  • Initiate and prepare technical guidelines, policies and regulations regarding environmental and environmental health issues.

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering plus six years related experience and registered with Engineers Nova Scotia as Licensed to Practice (or with an Engineering Association in another Canadian jurisdiction with the ability to transfer their registration to Nova Scotia).

The successful candidate must have related experience in one or more of the following areas: water management systems, waste management systems, associated pollution abatement and control equipment, hydrology and hydraulic structures. A working knowledge of industrial and construction processes, soil, industrial and municipal waste management systems, hydrology, geology, toxicology, biology, laboratory practices, chemistry including chemicals and their hazards is an asset. Knowledge of departmental legislation, regulations, standards; as well as demonstrated ability to interpret regulations, policies and analytical reports is an asset.

Strong communication (both oral and written), interpersonal, leadership, project management, and sound judgment skills are essential. Must have a valid drivers license.

Working Conditions

Pay Grade: PR 18
Salary Range: $3,231.58 - $3,800.42 Bi-Weekly
