About Us

The Workers' Compensation Appeals Tribunal is an independent tribunal which hears and decides appeals from final decisions of the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB). The Tribunal is governed by the Workers' Compensation Act of Nova Scotia and is the final level of appeal within the workers' compensation system.

About Our Opportunity

As a Relief Clerk 3, you will provide clerical support services to the Tribunal and be responsible for the administration of appeals during various stages of the appeal process. The incumbent is required to function with a high degree of independence, utilizing considerable initiative and judgment regarding all aspects of the Tribunal's operations. The incumbent will have the ability to deal with confidential information in a discreet and tactful manner, applying Tribunal policies and procedures as necessary.

Organization and time management skills are essential to this role, as well as maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. You must demonstrate flexibility in your work routine, be well-organized, have the ability to multitask, and establish priorities to manage a demanding workload. You must maintain effective working relationships and handle matters with discretion, confidentiality, tact and diplomacy.

Primary Accountabilities

As the successful candidate, your responsibilities include:

  • transcribing and creating a variety of documents including appeal decisions and correspondence;
  • printing high volume documents;
  • updating appeal information using the WCB's database system and various spreadsheets;
  • maintaining an established filing system;
  • contacting appeal participants, as required; and
  • providing front desk and telephone reception relief.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful Relief Clerk 3, you will have four years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

For this position, your competency and experience in a computerized environment with proficient and accurate keyboarding, dictation transcription and data entry skills is required. You will have experience adapting to evolving technologies and procedures. A high degree of initiative and excellent organization and communication skills are essential to this role.

Your ability to deal effectively with the public, involving sensitive situations, will be important to your success in this role.

Your key skills include attention to detail, confidentiality, and the ability to work under pressure with deadlines.

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Related equivalencies may include, but are not limited to:

  • A two-year certificate/diploma plus two years of related experience
  • A one-year certificate/diploma plus three years of related experience

Working Conditions

  • Relief employees fill gaps in the schedule and replace full time employees when operational requirements demand as determined by the Employer. Typically, the hours are between 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, however this may vary depending on operational needs.
  • There is a high demand for accuracy and attention to detail in this position.

Additional Information

This competition is to fill a Relief vacancy in Halifax. A relief employee is an employee who is not regularly scheduled by the Employer, but who works relief assignments to replace full-time employees on an as-needed basis as operational requirements demand. As such, a relief employee does not have guaranteed hours of work.

Pay Grade: CL 18
Salary Range: $1,684.00 - $1,884.17 Bi-Weekly
