Job Summary
This position involves skilled technical work in the field of Orthotics, under the direction of a certified Orthotist. This involves the fabrication of orthoses, and in the filling of prescriptions for specific orthopedic requirements. The individual works in the manufacturing of assistive devices of orthotics, orthopedic footwear and adapted equipment, in order to assist in the provision of devices to persons with neurological and/or physical disabilities; in order to promote the client?s independence and quality of life.

Occasionally lifts materials weighing between 25 and 50 lbs and regularly works with plaster casts which can be quite heavy. Many of the items are awkwardly shaped making lifting and moving difficult.
Constantly standing using hand tools requiring accurate control, steadiness and movement to fabricate devices, mold and shape objects.
Regularly uses gross and fine motor skills to lift and assemble wheelchair components.
Visual concentration includes using machinery such as a band saw, ensuring proper measurements and proper alignment of all devices. Repetition requiring alertness occurs when sewing with an industrial sewing machine or when grinding materials. Knives are frequently used which requires concentration to avoid injury. Works with students or volunteers observing their use of fabrication machinery, therefore attention is critical.
Job QualificationsSuccessful completion of formal training in Prosthetics and Orthotics from a recognized Prosthetics and Orthotics Technical College Program is required.
The Registered Technician must maintain registered status with the Orthotics Prosthetics Canada
Minimum of two years of experience within the last four in a Prosthetics and Orthotics facility is required.
Demonstrated strong technical and communication skills and be experienced in plasterwork, metal bending, thermoplastic formulation, as well as laminating of upper and lower extremity prosthetics.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
