Job SummaryThe Organ Procurement Program provides a 24-hour, 7 day per week on-call service. Reporting to the Division Manager - MSICU, the Registered Nurse IB in Organ Procurement fulfils two key functions: importation, storage, distribution and tracking of tissues, and coordination of all aspects of the organ donation process. The Registered Nurse IB will be expected to gain a comprehensive understanding and adhere to the regulations laid out in Health Canada's Guidance Document for Cells, Tissues and Organs, the Z900 CSA and the Human Tissue Gift Act.

Please note, the successful candidate must be available for full-time hours during the orientation (75 hours bi-weekly for approximately 6 months) and during peak periods when relief is required.

The Registered Nurse IB in the Organ Procurement Program will operate as the Medical Directors designate in determining the safety of organs for release to the transplant programs. The organ donation process consists of determination of suitability of potential donors; obtaining informed consent; coordinating necessary investigations; providing guidance and support for critical care staff on donor maintenance; allocating organs as per national guidelines; coordinating the retrieval process; packaging, labelling and shipping of organs to transplant programs; and supporting the donor family throughout the process. The Registered Nurse IB promotes public awareness of organ donation through education sessions at schools, special interest groups and the general public. The Registered Nurse IB also provides education on organ donation to health care providers.

This position regularly participates in ongoing quality assurance activities including chart reviews to determine missed opportunities for organ donation as well as the development, review and revision of policies. In addition, the Registered Nurse I is required to occasionally travel to other facilities in St. John's and other regions. Other related duties as required.

Job DemandsBy applying for this job, you acknowledge an understanding that regular requirements and demands of this job include (but are not limited to):
Constantly moves/lifts up to 10 lbs., regularly moves/lifts up to 25 lbs., and occasionally is required to restrain/reposition/move/ lift up to 40lbs. Pushes/pulls up to medium force.
There is a significant on-call demand and working long, irregular hours during the organ donation process.
Constantly stands/walks and works in awkward or cramped positions to assist with procedures. Prolonged standing during organ recovery procedures.
Constantly uses fine finger/precision, auditory, sensory and visual concentration to provide and conduct risk assessments, observe/monitor patients, to complete documents, follow directions, administer medications, etc.
May be subject to time pressures/deadlines and subject to lack of control over work pace.

Job Qualifications
Graduation from a recognized School of Nursing is required.
Current and continuing practicing licensure with the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CRNNL) is required.
Previous experience with the organ donation program is an asset.
Previous OR/PORR (Adult) experience is an asset.
Current Critical Care experience is required (two (2) years' experience within the last four (4) years).
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.

*If there are no internal or external candidates with ICU/CCU experience, candidates who possess Emergency Department or Recovery Room experience may be considered.
