ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Surgical Services Perioperative Program of NL Health Services – Eastern Urban Zone invites applications for a full-time Cardiac Anesthesiologist at Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, NL, with a start date of June 20, 2026.

The successful candidate will join a group of six (6) Cardiac Anesthesiologists at HSC, working with the entire group of 22 Anesthesiologists including cardiac. The Anesthesiologist will function as a key member of the perioperative team, responsible for the provision of anesthetic services to surgical patients. Practice will be at least 50% in the provision of cardiovascular anesthesia, with direct involvement in the care of patients pre- and post-operatively, including responsibility for pre-admission anesthesia clinics and post-operative pain management.

Health Sciences Centre runs 14–16 operating rooms per day across the following surgical specialties: General, Cardiac, Neuro-Surgery, Plastic, Orthopedic, Gynecology/Gyne-ONC, Cath Lab, Neuro-Interventional Radiology, Ophthalmology, and Urology. Anesthesiologists also provide support to ECT, Endovascular Treatment of Stroke, and Acute Pain Services.

On-call coverage averages two (2) times per month, with additional second-call coverage for APS, EVT, and second team averaging one to two times per month. Members of the Cardiac Anesthesia group provide specific coverage for cardiovascular anesthesia on call and transesophageal echocardiography for the perioperative program on call.

Health Sciences Centre is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, providing opportunities to engage in educational experiences with anesthesia residents and undergraduate medical students.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Medical Degree (MD) from a recognized institution
  • Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification in Anesthesiology (or pending certification)
  • Subspecialty fellowship training in Cardiac Anesthesia required
  • Successful certification of competency in advanced perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (NBE or equivalent examination)
  • Demonstrated recent experience and expertise in anesthesia for Cardiac, Neuro-Surgery, Cath-Lab, Neuro-Interventional Radiology, and Urology surgical services
  • Priority given to candidates with recent clinical experience at the HSC site
  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.cpsnl.ca)
  • Must satisfy credentialing and privilege requirements of NL Health Services including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide anesthetic services to surgical patients with at least 50% of practice in cardiovascular anesthesia
  • Deliver pre-operative anesthesia clinic services and post-operative pain management
  • Provide anesthetic coverage across General, Cardiac, Neuro-Surgery, Plastic, Orthopedic, Gynecology/Gyne-ONC, Cath Lab, Neuro-Interventional Radiology, Ophthalmology, and Urology
  • Provide support to ECT, Endovascular Treatment of Stroke, and Acute Pain Services
  • Provide cardiovascular anesthesia on-call coverage and transesophageal echocardiography for the perioperative program on call
  • Participate in on-call coverage averaging two (2) times per month plus second-call coverage averaging one to two times per month
  • Contribute to teaching and education of anesthesia residents and undergraduate medical students through the Memorial University affiliation
  • Support person- and family-centered care; promote patient and worker safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements

REMUNERATION

Remuneration is Fee-For-Service in accordance with the Medical Care Plan (MCP) Fee Schedule.
