Our Team
Vale and Thiess have partnered on the Stobie Open Pit Mining Project. This is a three-year, full-service joint venture located in the city of Greater Sudbury, Ontario. Last mined in 2017, the Stobie property is ramping back up in response to the world's increasing demand for critical minerals, and social and economic benefits for the local communities.

The Opportunity
We are currently seeking Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanics to join the Maintenance Team at Stobie Open Pit in Sudbury, Ontario. This is a permanent on-site position at Vale Base Metals working shift and supporting a 24 hour, 7 days a week, operation. Schedule is from Wednesday to Tuesday (7 on/7 off), rotating days and nights, 12-hour shifts.


As a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, you will be responsible for repairing, troubleshooting, adjusting, overhauling, servicing, and maintaining underground mobile mining equipment. Your experience and skills will contribute to scheduled or emergency repairs, and preventative maintenance work to be done in the shop or field.

Additionally, in this position, you will:

  • Inspect, diagnose, adjust, repair, assemble, replace and test internal combustion, electric mobile equipment, and electric/hydraulic production equipment and related systems.
  • Perform metal welding, excluding pressure welding.
  • Align with work safety policies and safety regulations.
  • Perform job responsibilities/duties outdoors in various weather conditions, including fluctuating temperatures and seasonal changes.

About You

  • Fully Licensed Journeyperson: Trade Certification either in Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (421A), Automotive Service Technician (310S), Truck and Coach Technician (310T) or Agricultural Equipment Technician (425A) is required.
  • Minimum Grade 12 or GED is required.

Experience and Skills:

  • 24 VDC wiring/control systems.
  • Maintenance of hydraulic systems on mobile equipment.
  • Braking systems "ABA" on large mobile equipment.
