ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

NL Health Services – Eastern Rural Zone has two (2) full-time Emergency Medicine positions available at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville, NL. These positions are fee-for-service and available immediately. A shared 0.5 FTE appointment could potentially be considered as an alternative.

ER shifts are allocated in an equitable and predictable templated format. ER MD shifting is solo, with ER Nurse Practitioner support from 8:00am–4:00pm on weekdays. A limited amount of second ER MD shifting is also available during peak periods. The position involves a minimum of 13–14 shifts per month — day shifts are 10 hours and night shifts are 14 hours.

Core generalist specialty support resources are in place. A dedicated portable ultrasound is based in the ER and 24-hour emergent CT scanning is available on site. MD ambulance transfer escort duties and operating room assistance may also be required. Excellent communication skills, a team player approach, and a strong commitment to high quality patient care are essential.

Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital provides services to a catchment area of approximately 20,000 people. The hospital has 41 acute care beds including palliative care, medical/surgical, obstetrics, pediatric, and ICU beds, as well as 9 ER beds and 44 long-term care beds. Services include anesthesia, chemotherapy, family practice, general surgery, gynecology, obstetrics, ICU/Cardiac, internal medicine, laboratory, palliative care, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, respiratory therapy, ultrasonography, and 24-hour emergency (Category A). Visiting clinics include neurology and ophthalmology.

Clarenville is a vibrant service centre in eastern Newfoundland offering an exceptional quality of life. The town is near a national park, downhill and cross-country ski lodges, two golf courses, and hunting and fishing opportunities. QUALIFICATIONS

  • Medical Degree (MD) from a recognized institution
  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.cpsnl.ca)
  • Must satisfy credentialing and privilege requirements of NL Health Services including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide comprehensive emergency medicine care to patients of all age groups
  • Work solo ER shifts with Nurse Practitioner support during weekday daytime hours
  • Perform and interpret point-of-care ultrasound as required
  • Participate in MD ambulance transfer escort duties and operating room assistance as required
  • Collaborate with core specialty and support services available on site
  • Participate in equitable and predictable shift scheduling
  • Support person- and family-centered care; promote patient and worker safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements

REMUNERATION

Remuneration is in accordance with the Medical Care Plan (MCP) guidelines for Category A Emergency Departments.

Annual Retention Bonus (in accordance with current MOA):

  • CAD 5,000 after 12 eligible months
  • CAD 10,000 after 24 eligible months
  • CAD 15,000 after 36 eligible months
