At GEMTEC, we offer something different. We're an employee-owned, 400-person multidisciplinary consulting firm—not too big, not too small. We're large enough to compete head-to-head with publicly traded engineering giants, but still small enough to maintain the culture and flexibility of a close-knit team.

Our size and hands-on management style let us move quickly, embrace new opportunities, and empower our people to shape their own careers—without getting lost in corporate bureaucracy.

You're an ideal candidate if you have:

  • Experience managing materials engineering and testing projects.
  • Experience delivering concrete laboratory testing services.
  • Experience training laboratory and field testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Extensive familiarity with CSA, ASTM, and other applicable standards.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

A typical day on the job might look like:

  • Managing civil engineering projects, with a particular focus on materials engineering and testing, construction oversight, and geotechnical engineering projects.
  • Serving as the main point of contact for key clients on materials, geotechnical, and civil engineering projects.
  • Performing project management functions, including proposal preparation, budget estimation, scheduling, scope management, technical reporting, maintaining quality throughout the project, and implementing improvement plans.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging regulatory requirements and best practices to ensure compliance with relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Coordination of field materials and geotechnical resources.
  • Reviewing and communication of field and laboratory reports and testing results to project teams and external clients.
  • Collaborating with the project team, external clients, and stakeholders to design and execute materials engineering solutions.
  • Developing technical reports related to materials engineering factual data and recommendations.
  • Supporting the operations of a CCIL certified concrete laboratory.
  • Mentoring and training junior staff on field testing of aggregates, soils, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Mentoring and training junior staff on laboratory concrete testing.
  • Maintaining and calibrating testing equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
  • Actively collaborate with Branch Managers on business planning and market strategy.
  • Providing leadership in client development and management, focusing on building sustainable relationships.
  • Field testing of aggregates, soil, asphalt, and concrete.
  • Performing various office, laboratory, and field tasks related to materials testing, geotechnical engineering, and environmental engineering.
  • Adhering to health and safety protocols, promoting a safe working environment.
  • Adhering to all company policies.
  • Performing other duties as required.

The good stuff you get:

  • Full time (37.5 hours per standard week – varies with client workload).
  • Fair pay plus extra: competitive salary with year-end profit-sharing bonus
  • Complete health & dental coverage including vision, paramedical services, and Teladoc
  • Retirement planning made easier with a 5% employer match on your contributions
  • Paid time off (vacation and sick days) plus Employee & Family Assistance Program when you need it
  • Office year-end closure (paid time off between Christmas and the New Year)

Your background and what you bring:

  • Currently registered, or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers Nova Scotia.
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited university.
  • Possess a minimum of 5 years of experience in civil engineering consulting.
  • CCIL certifications for testing concrete, aggregates, and/or asphalt are considered an asset.
