Our Public Works Department plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure that supports our community. Do to an upcoming retirement, we are currently seeking a skilled and experienced Mechanic/Operator to join our team.
Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the Mechanic/Operator will be responsible for maintaining and repairing the municipal fleet of vehicles/equipment and assisting the department in public works operations. You will exemplify leadership to the departments team, promoting a culture of safety and teamwork. Ensure that all work is performed safely, efficiently, documented, and in compliance with municipal policy/procedures including provincial occupational health and safety regulations. This role is vital to ensuring the smooth operation of our public works services, including road maintenance, snow removal, and other essential municipal functions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment, including trucks, graders, loaders, backhoes, bus and various other municipal equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical issues and determine appropriate repair methods.
- Oversee and prioritize daily work orders, ensuring timely and effective completion of tasks.
- Lead, train, and mentor any apprentices, promoting a culture of safety and teamwork to all employees.
- Maintain accurate records of all repairs, maintenance schedules, and parts inventory.
- Ensure compliance with all municipal, provincial, and federal safety regulations and inspections.
- Collaborate with other Public Works staff to coordinate equipment availability and readiness for various projects and emergencies.
- Assist in the development and implementation of preventative maintenance programs.
- Assist in all public works operations as needed.
Qualifications:
- Applicants must have completed high school and possess a Journeyperson's Certificate as a mechanic (Heavy Equipment Technician, Truck & Transport) issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador supplemented with experience in vehicle maintenance and repair. A Journeyperson Automotive Technician having experience with heavyequipment will be considered.
- A foreign diploma or certificate equal to the applicable Canadian credential will also be considered with the following documentation (to be submitted with application):
- An educational credential assessment (ECA) report from a recognized organization to show your credential is valid and equal to a Canadian credential. If you already have an ECA report, it must be less than 5 years old.
- Language testing - Must have taken the approved language testing for Atlantic Immigration Program which is less than 2 years old and meets the level the program requires.
- Valid work permit or other authorization to legally work in Canada.5+ years of experience in heavy equipment repair, preferably within a municipal or public works setting.
- Strong leadership and promoter of safe workplaces
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing a wide range of mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of municipal infrastructure and public works operations is an asset.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other departments.
- Proficient in use of computers and computer systems (Microsoft Office, Auotmatic Vehicle Location Systems, GPS Systems)
- Valid Provincial class 5 driver's license. Applicants must obtain class 3, 4 & 8 within a mutually agreed timeframe if not already obtained upon hire.
- A clean driving record
- A police records check with a vulnerable sector query
