Nurse Practitioner (.5 FTE)

Saint Vincent's Nursing Home is an accredited not-for-profit home in the heart of Halifax, NS. We are a resident and family-centred community caring for each other. We are currently accepting applications for a part time Nurse Practitioner working 40 hours bi-weekly, day shift only.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) partners with and complements other members of the health care team for the achievement of resident and family-centred care for long term care residents living with specialized and complex needs. The NP will have responsibility for one unit and will support other units as required. The NP provides clinical leadership for the Medical & Therapeutics Committee and integrates current scientific knowledge in geriatrics and best practice guidelines in decision-making based on critical appraisal and application of literature and research findings. The NP is an integral member of the team and collaborates with the Medical Director and unit physicians.

The ideal candidate will act as a resource, preceptor and mentor for nurses, students and other team members and will work with the interdisciplinary care team to develop and deliver services to residents.

The NP adheres to the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) standards for Nursing Practice and Code of Ethics and is accountable for their own practice consistent with relevant legislation, professional and ethical standards.

Qualifications / Education / Experience

  • Master of Nursing: Advanced Nursing Practice stream or equivalent NP program,
  • Current (or pending) registration as a Nurse Practitioner with CRNNS - Family/All Ages,
  • Current BCLS Certification,
  • Recent relevant experience working in a NP role within Long Term Care preferred.

  • Assessment and Intervention: clinical/diagnostic reasoning, care planning, case management, evaluation of client self-care and related outcomes coupled with nursing care,
  • Communication: builds positive and open relationships with residents, families, community partners, team members, and other professionals using verbal, written and electronic means,
  • Critical Thinking: clinical judgment and problem-solving with the ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data sources to problem-solve effectively within scope of practice,
  • Resident and Family-Centered Practice: strong ethical standards and a commitment to professional development and life-long learning. Promotion of care for and with residents and significant others. Sensitive to client advocacy and social justice concerns,
  • Teaching: ability to transmit information grounded in behavior change and principles of self-management intended to instruct residents and others about topics essential for health care and well-being. Application of innovative education and counselling technologies and strategies,
  • Time and Resource Management: implementing activities to promote cooperation among relevant others, collaboration across disciplines and related activities,
  • Leadership: promotes staff morale, cooperation, assertiveness and risk-taking, creative planning for change and innovation, implementation of policies or other protocols, and ongoing professional development,
  • Language Competencies: ability to work with others to deliver care in other languages is an asset,
  • Technology Literacy: experience with Microsoft Office and electronic health records,
  • Attendance: must have the ability to maintain regular and consistent attendance.
