SCIENCE TECHNICAL SHOP
The Faculty of Science's Technical Shop provides technical services in support of teaching and research activities for the faculty as well as for some non-Science users (e.g., Engineering, Forestry and Environmental Management). Under the oversight of the Chemistry Chair and the Chemistry Technical Services Committee, shop personnel carry out maintenance and repair of scientific instrumentation used for undergraduate teaching and research activities. The Science Technical Shop team also designs and constructs highly sophisticated laboratory equipment for these users, some of whom rely on the in-house design and production of sophisticated electronic circuitry.

Standard Work Hours: Mon - Fri | 8:15 am - 4:30 pm | 36.25 hours per week
Additional Working Conditions:
- Must be able to physically meet the job requirements and demands and navigate the layout of the building.
Salary Range: $47,030 - $61,145 per annum
This salary range is subject to increases based upon the terms of the new collective agreement once signed by both parties.
YOUR FOCUS
Reporting to the Chief Technologist, the Electronics Engineering Technologist maintains, diagnoses and repairs scientific instrumentation. This position also designs and produces new laboratory equipment and electronic circuitry.
- Maintain, service, and repair all scientific instrumentation used for undergraduate teaching and research activities.
- Troubleshoot problems on major scientific instrumentation and obviate expensive service contracts via in-house repair.
- Calibrate, test, and evaluate the performance of standard and complex instruments.
- Assist in the maintenance of critical departmental equipment.
- Dispense liquid nitrogen; assist with routine liquid nitrogen and liquid helium fills of major instrumentation.
- Provide technical advice and assistance as required by Faculty members.
- Conceive, design, and construct laboratory instrumentation for teaching and research laboratories including items requiring the design of electrical and electronic circuitry.
- Construct metal, plastic, and other components using the shop's machining equipment.
- Ensure safe disposal of chemicals.
- Repair, clean and rebuild vacuum pumps.
- Assist the Chief Technologist in the day-to-day operations of the Science Technical Shop.
- Maintain inventories of components and supplies. Maintain a list of parts and supplies databases.
- Monitor the status of work requests.
- Other related duties as required.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology.
- Experience in maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of equipment and instrumentation. Experience in the design and fabrication of printed circuits.
- Experience with computers and computer software.
Additional Strengths
- Experience in sheet metal design and fabrication, metal lathing, and silver soldering is highly recommended.
- Able to communicate and work effectively with a range of individuals, from undergraduate students to faculty members to external users.
